In another thread we might be talking about that famous Indian hospitality.

I can't understand considering the 'story' even for a minute.

After only two sentences I knew I did read something about it.
You can read about this exact scam here (under the header "Diamonds (Jaipur)"):

nick; i can understand a local meeting three other locals going in to a party at a private residence. locals know the lay of the land and would prolly say, hey thats too far or something like that or maybe they might be go with it regardless. its also another thing if its in a unversity campus setting or say a school setting what not with youths.

however i cannot understand a lone foreign traveller in a foreign country taking the same offer that too late in the night. i am sorry thats just being careless and leaving your guard down. no, its not the question of famous indian hospitality or not. whatever it is, it can wait for doing it during the day, during daylight....

this happened to us in calicut but there were four of us and we accepted the offer of some locals who we met in the beach to have dinner with them in a public restaurant. soon a bunch of locals joined in and we had a whale of time at the restaurant. we however politely declined to head later out into the city somehwere when these guys wanted to hang out late like 1am or so after a boisterous fun dinner. whatever it is and i am sure these guys were harmless, and that there were four of us, it could have waited till the morning.

there was a big debate over at LP a little bit ago about some single travelling women going like this for late night beach walks with strangers they had just met during the day in goan towns/beaches. while i understand its situational, and once known personal judgement of people/characters, i really question the need for such stuff especially when you hear of incidents of rape/eve teasing what not. oh well!.

You're right.

I was just thinking about what I might have done at 23 rather than 53. Now, I wouldn't be doing the drinking (or smoking, etc) in the first place...

Totally agree with greenchutney...why on earth would anyone join some strangers in their residence, late at night...that too in a foreign country. Better to be safe than sorry...testing indian hospitality can wait.

hey what's the name of that movie..claire danes in it, I think....she ends up in a thai jail for carrying someone else's "parcel"...

If you feeling intiminated, ring the tourist police. that's what they are there for. this is why they say to register at the local police station too.

Thumbs down

Namaste,
Even as one who has not been to India yet. I have heard of this scam at least 25 times. If you want to throw away money and not go to jail, have a party for all IM's that can make it . You would not be robbed and will mostly likely find quite a few true new friends who don't need or want your money AND you would have a great time and new friends who are down to earth, without a scam for you (at least I believe that this last statement is true)
peace and good luck, gregor

They don't say to register at the local police station. Not for tourists.

I'm afraid I wouldn't like to rely on the Indian police for any help. Who is likely to have the number about their person, anyway?

what bothers me the most is that you know what these guys are in to, willingly or unwillingly you have become a paty to this by talking with these people on this matter. You may not want to play ball now for obvious reasons but they? In my opinion just get away.
About local hospitality I have enjoyed it very much in foreign countries, but again there are all sorts of "locals" in every country...
