about hardwar "town" -
such "religious cities" such as hardwar in india have little to offer as a "town". hardwar = the area around the river bank where people take "dips". no more. similarly tirupathi = the temple basically, and little else. varanasi comes to mind, as a major exception to this, though. why did you venture into the town? i was there just 6 months back, and saw lots of foreigners near the cemented river banks, soaking in the ambience, especially at night, when the whole place is flood lit. most westerners wore indian traditional clothes, both the women and the menfolk. some men had vertical lines of "red" vermillion on their heads, and the ladies wore vermillion "bindi"s. i spoke to a few too. none had reasons to give the barely existant "town" a once over !! |

AGRA..!!! The Taj is the biggest rip-off on earth! Wonder why people still throng it.
Mysore...whoever said it is boring..had a persuasive point. It is BORING! Goa...been there 15 times..(all business trips...can u believe that?). I HATE the place...cheap booze notwithstanding. Delhi...mother-of-all-rip-offs!!! Chennai...world's largest waste basket... (when will I get out of this???) Bangalore...honestly...tooooo crowded. But the weekedn getawys are the best a city can offer. Hyderabad...been there tooooooooooooooo many times....would like a change.

re haridwar
why did you venture into the town?
a) because we arrived by train, not boat b) because our hotel was there. Did we miss something by not dressing up in Indian clothes (all of the westerners we saw dressed in this style belonged that mythical tribe "the great unwashed") to sit by the Ganges and if so would it have made our stay in Haridwar more pleasurable? |

Skell, your curiosity is most welcome. Mine is a case of over-exposure. I have been subjected to the Taj in every possible manner right from cheap calendars, to dainty marble/rosewood/sandalwood carvings, to enachanted stories down to the actual thing itself. I have had enuff. Sincerely, I find it a paranoid obsession of a detached ruler painfully attached to his 27th wife (?) who debauched an entire kingdom with these creations and let an apology called Aurangzeb find enough reason to ditch him and takeover the empire in the most despicable manner. The sheen of the Taj is lost in me before the sight of the severed hands of the architect...and the stench of the polluted Yamuna. Mysore...apart from the palace...which itself has no mysteries, nothing enchants me. A palace or fort must have stories. This one has a boring one. Tirupati...have u ever been accosted by pimps here? They are the worst of the lot. Getting a darshan is all about having the right contacts. Plus it is crowded...I hate mindless crowds. the hill sides are great. Hyderabad....simple...overexpo sure. Luv the Golconda fort. Bangalore...I lived there enough to hate it...try driving across it in a car. Goa...well...I found it too laid-back. Old Goa and Dudhsagar and the hills are an exception. What I like? Mountains, rain-forests, lakes, rivers, seas, mysteries, legends, TRAINS, monasteries, ancient temples, modern skyscrapers, water-falls (my dream is to trek to the bottom of the Angel Falls)...well many other things. |

never tried to claim as much ( miss something by not dressing up..... )
just wanted to show how much they were "into" the ambience. they surely wouldnt have dont that if they were having a hard time would they? thats what i meant. well its bad that your hotel was "deep" into the town. 'cos most people check into one thats "overlooking" the ganges. maybe those were full... anyway i am not pleased to hear that you dont have fond memories of one of the more polular places in india .... maybe next time. ![]() |
