I went to Meerut to visit a cemetery. Does that count as pleasure?
My most disturbing Indian experience was an attempt to thrust a two year old girl upon me by its male relative (ie an instant adoption). This took place on the Causeway in Colaba, Mumbai. |

Fatehpur Sikri
I'd been looking forward so much, and was happy to find there were only very few tourists there at Akbar's Mosque, quite unlike the crowds we had encountered the day before at the Taj. But hardly had I stepped out of the car when a guy ran up to me to offer his 'assistance' and couldn't be shaken off. If it was only him, it'd have been unpleasant enough, but at the same time I was hassled non-stop by so many would-be guides and pesky trinket sellers, that the visit was totally ruined. In the end I got so rattled by the constant demanding followers around me, that I tripped on a cobble stone and banged my big toe...ouch! it took weeks to heal. |

Pity. They can be a real nuisance for sure.
I think I should start a business- "Tout dispersal". - We guarantee no tout within a 20 foot radius. For premium members, 30. Talk about job satisfaction ![]() |

i have been to aaaaagra twice and seen everything the city and surrounds have to offer. Never again. It is the worst place in Northern India to go to.
mahabalipuram was Ok but so touristy that I don't need to see it twice.Jhansi didn't make me a happy chappy .Mumbai is so expensive and I habe seen it all so I don't need to go back for a while. Mysore was good, I liked it .But that was nearly 8 years ago and India is always changing.Nowhere special shat me to tears this year.I am after four long trips across India since 1998 a bit of an India old hand now.. |

I see Mysore on some people's dislike list. I happen to like Mysore. The hill has a neat mythological story and we always visit the zoo. Your priorities change when you are travelling with children. "A god killed a demon here" stories and pits full of cobras are fun with kids. :P

i pretty much enjoyed the three places i visited in India. However, traveling around the pondy bazaar was VERY hard for 11 American 22 year old dancers.... very overwhelming

Ha! Yes, it would be. I find it hard enough for a couple to keep track of each other on that two foot of pavement that is that is left inside the stalls! Try Parry's on a busy day: some of the little streets get traffic jams that even pedestrians can't get past!

Strange that I haven't seen Gorakhpur get a mention on this *long* thread as it was the first place that popped into my head like a swinging ton of bricks.
Had to spend a night there once on my way to Nepal - a miserable fly- and mosquito-plagued dump full of unfriendly, even aggressive people, the only affordable hotel a grotty, smelly hellhole. Worst of all - one month later on my way back to India, I somehow managed to end up stranded in Gorakhpur for yet another night. Ugh. |

Guys when you talk about Gorakhpur, I have done a lot of my schooling from there!
I know it only gets tourists because it is close to Nepal and Kushinagar. |
