as i look back on my trip, i realize i would be less likely to revisit the places that made the least impression on me, but then, those are the places i was only passing through so didn't have time to really see anything, eg; towns like siliguri, deradhun, gaya, jaipur. I cant say i'll never be back because they will always be on the way to the places i want to visit.
having said that, the day i spent in delhi waiting for a train was much more pleasant then i expected. i always said "I'm not going to delhi" but when forced to stopover there i found it surprisingly stress-free. shopping in paharghanj was fun and less of a hassle than many other places in india. people i met were friendly, i had a great lunch, in short, all my preconcieved notions of delhi were destroyed! of the places i visited willfully and spent some time, i think mussoorie was my least favorite, but i think that i was unfairly comparing it to darjeeling, one of my favorite cities in the world. |

This thread has good interest but should have been titled:
"I'm not going there again because ......" The "Delhi sucks" responses with no explanation helps no one and proves nothing. The "Delhi sucks because it's too crowded, congested, dusty, the shoe-poo trick is gross & unhygienic, and I have a uneasiness about those rogue red-faced monkeys jumping about" makes some legitimate points for others to consider. We all have likes & dislikes and travel for different reasons and with different comfort criterions.

True... the thread, if it is to have any (amusement, at the very least) value should be about experience; not lists!

I won't go to Delhi in June/July again because I love this city and at this time of the year it's just too hot to do all the things I want to do without collapsing on the street. (I had a good time anyway, but I wouldn't recommend it to other IMers.)

Hmmm..
The "I'm not going there again award" goes to: My inlaws house in Shimla! hehe does that qualify in the list of places I'd rather have my teeth drilled on, than stay there again? Yeah..Agra sucked too. What a shame. |

Ahmedabad...
- Stayed in the A-One hotel (more like a D-flat), dirty, grubby, rooms like cells... also looked like there had been a murder in the room cos one of the walls was plastered in brown-red stain (actually chewing tobacco juice-yuk!)... Outside our window was the busiest, dustiest, polluted, noisiest road ever! Our stay (about ooh five hours!) was accompanied by the constant sound of hundreds of Indian business men clearing their throats and spitting. The shared bathroom was a hang out place for the perviest men in India as they constantly stared at my girlfriend (more so than anywhere else). At one point I nipped out to pick up some supplies, whilst my girlfriend waited (hid) in the room. I told her that I would do a special knock on the door to let her know it was me. No sooner had I left then she heard a constant knocking on the door. She asked who it was and got no reply but she could hear someone messing with the door handle. This freaked her out as she was alone. Also Ahmedabad had a very chaotic train station and the main road was impossible to cross! I eventually resorted to mimicing the actions of an old man as he crossed. His foot forward, my foot forward, he takes a step back, I take a step back etc. Also Rishikesh - Cos we both got pretty ill there! Got constantly bothered by Sadhu's and Baba's who kept trying to sell me drugs (must have been my long hair) and it was a pretty boring place if your main interest ISN'T yoga! My girlfriend was bed-ridden for days and I have never been so bored! Also all the ashrams and yoga halls seemed a bloody rip off. |

This is just a list of personal views/horror stories. Everyones experience WILL differ.
So don't fret too much some places you'll enjoy along the way others less so, then you'll be able to get back to this thread and tell us why you didn't like a place!! One point though, you're visiting an awful lot of big towns and cities.......ever thought about trying somewhere smaller to enjoy some relaxation!! |

When all's said and done liking a place or not seems to be 99.9% circumstancial I'd say, never mind the monuments or lack thereof. It's more about having the right mood (or not), meeting the right people, agreeable weather, nice conversations, a smile from a stranger, bumping into the right place to eat, etc. (again, or not) I find. It's kind of like being at home
![]() (I'll second the small town idea though.)

Everybody reacts a little differently to life(and Indian towns).
One person has a 9 good experiences and one bad experience and dwells on that bad experience for years. Another person has 9 bad things happen and one good thing ... and the good time is all that matters and remember. .... you need take India with a grain of salt ...... and do pack you funny bone. ![]() |
