my mother went to india some years ago. she hated it. i love it. each person has their own experience, so go and enjoy yours !!

But skinny dipping, I thought that was for the country from where I come, secluded nudist beaches... But I like the beaches in India too, the breakers in Puri are just great, though you tend to lose your panties when it is too rough!!

For me it is Manali, a getaway to most of the treks and Ladakh and Lahul and Spiti. Manali gets horribly crowded in season, people litter with abandon and there is no sense of professionalism in hotels and road transport services. Nothing wrong with the place per se but gets too many people these days and it feels like almost Delhi plus mountains.

But I cannot avoid going there, as one can reach Ladakh or Lahul by road through Manali.

Although in a previous thread I said that Delhi ws my least favourite place, I hate all big cities with a passion really - and try just to use them for transition purposes. BUT there is one place thatnI despise with every crumbling bone in my body. The Indian Passport Office in Chennai

! They kept me and three kids waiting for six hours (no toilets available) and then proceeded to verbally abuse us - loudly! I must have been unlucky enough to get the most arrogant employee of all time. Just had to add this post - even though it's not a real additive to this thread

Why not ? You can reach Ladakh from Srinagar, without going anywhere near Manali.

Srinagar is more in distance from Delhi than Manali and when a destination is just a stop over such things do matter to me.

Paharganj freaks me out! There was a time when I used to commute almost every other weekend from kanpur to Delhi and had to face Paharganj on every visit. But I have read many people who say it is fine and they get used to the area after their stay of a few days. maybe it is us who pass by, find it more difficult?

Madurai without a doubt.....

Nice temples and museums but not worth the agro. I arrived there about 6am booked in to my guest house...did some sights...was ready to burst into a fit of rage Bruce Lee would have been proud of...so checked out and then got the bus to Trichy at 8pm the same day.

Gulbarga is crapola.

I actually like all the other places that people hate (if I've stayed for a few days)! I am freaked out for the first 24 hrs. most everywhere

Though I haven't been to many of the hated list, I suspect I would still like them also. That's always been India for me: love it....hate it....love it

You arrive in a town tired ,late at night, dirty,and feeling sh**y.End up in a very dirty rickshaw with an obnoxios driver, Sleep in a dinjey, dirty hotel with horrible staff,there is a good chance you will hate that town . Arrive tired,late at night ,someone has taken that dirty rickshaw . The next in line looks better and the driver does his best to help you .Leave him a bit extra ,he's a happy man. The hotel you have selected doesent look to good . Try hotel next door ,and find it clean with freindly staff.. Oh my , what a lovely town . Same town.
I have even seen Gokarna and Madurai listed here, two of my alltime fave places ,give them a bit of time .

my first intro to india was jaipur; i went there to intern with an ayurvedic doctor. i grew to hate that place, or maybe i never liked it from the onset. i doubt i'll ever return.

i however, loved dharamsala, but after my third visit there this year my feelings on that place changed too. it has become crowded, very dirty and smelly and for me, has lost its charm. maybe it was just overcrowded because the dalai lama was giving his teachings, but somehow the energy felt like a trapped/stuck one. but then there are a lot of tibetans and kashmiris who would rather not be there (they'd rather be home) so i think that is part of it?
