I've had days in India when I've felt a bit like amogasiddhi does. I found that a couple of days of retreating from the hassle did the trick. A couple of days doing nothing: reading, sitting in a cafe, a park, by a river, even just retreating to my room if needs be.
By then, the batteries were recharged and I was ready to face the world again. And I'd got bored and wanted a bit of adventure again. But India ain't for everyone, amogasiddhi. If you're after somewhere exotic with a bit less hassle try Thailand or somewhere else in SE Asia. I get the impression that you're looking for something in India that isn't really there anymore. Or, more likely, was never there in the first place.

Thanks, Ikuru. I have to admit that I felt moved when I wrote it and it seemed appropriate
....and that the inspiration for the metaphor had something to do with my current girlfriend ![]()

Nick-H, am very impressed by the "Girl of my dreams" bit.
I think India can be difficult for some people, and I agree it is annoying and stressful to deal with touts, scams etc. Personally speaking, I go back to India because I love its people. I love the fact that some people go out of their way to do things for you and you are welcomed in most people's homes (even though you might have to field questions about salary and marriage!). I am not excusing the corruption, I wish it were not rampant. I guess one has to be able to take the good and bad together; if it's hard to achieve that balance, then India will be impossible for most people. |

Something that was brought up above and that has been on my mind: After Moga's initial high expectations and many a post here we only heard back a couple of times now, apparently always from bigger/more well-trodden places in Northern India. These are all assumptions, which have proved to be potentially fatal over some recent posts here, but if he or she has been hanging around in such places for the past six weeks I am not at all surprised that he or she is not having a good time.
To me the north was just too overwhelming and hectic at first. Going down south helped me to relax and get into the feel of things. After a while though I also found it languid and lethargic in a way with not too much going on (hope not to pick any fights here, and yes there are many beautiful places there! really! I agree! oh and did I mention great people!) like many tropical countries are, and moving back up north I suddenly really liked all the action and the crazy frenzy going on, and maybe only then did I feel like I started to get into the thick of things so to speak. No two travellers are alike of course and we all have our different tastes and experiences, but hanging around in the bigger northern towns and nothing else might well get you jaded very soon and I've heard the same from many people. If you haven't found your way after six weeks though maybe it's time to call it a day, who are we to say though. Maybe Moga's having a splendid time and just needs to get something off his/her chest at the internet cafe every two weeks. Anyway, good luck mate and other mates.

Have to go for Agra, the tourist guide we were met with took us to some tomb first then tried to get us to go into the red fort then to the Taj, we later found out that the entry ticket to the Taj would have got us in all of the places for the one price. The whole place just seemed to be a fast turn around rip em off as quick as you can place, sorry to say.

I'd have to say Agra...Although the Taj Mahal was beautiful, I think once you've seen it, don't really need to see it again..... ![]() |

Ya Shimla,
apart from a Palace that is very tasteless....there is nothing else in Mysore. The Tipu forts i have not been there yet. There is Agra, and its touts that i find annoying. Taj Mahal is beautiful.....but, the touts and the number of dealers...shoving things on ur face, like marble inlay boxes, leather whips, carpets, tanga walas etc etc, and their annoying ways put me off. I think that is the only bad thing abt watch, when i watch out for when i get there next time. |

*sigh*
Just read all that. Most of the places I wanted to go seems to be listed here. It seems the India is a Love or Hate relationship, depending on how well you can filter out the negative bits and enjoy the positives. With my trip in the near future, I am fearful of which side of the fence I will fall. |

I was (and still am i suppose) reeeally looking forward to seeing all the architecture. |

IM can only give you impressions and opinions about the places you might like to visit. If you're curious go and see the place and form your own opinions then when you get back you can join the for or against clubs for any particular destination
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder or something like that! Go and see what you want to see, regardless of what me or others might say about a place! That's part of the adventure Happy Traveling ![]() |
