I've found the palm works pretty well, i keep my head straight and as soon as I see them approaching I put out my hand towards their face, so I dont have to look at it. A bit like when you are playing rugby and you have the ball and are palming off people trying to tackle you

Touts are only doing their job, trying to make a living. Theres nothing wrong with that & really they're not really too persistant compared to straight persistantly following Beggers, They are the real problem,,,,,,,,,,,,,

You don't think we've been saying this all along?
If only it were that simple!
You can say No Thank You till your throat is sore and they will persist.

I do think there's something wrong with it. All jobs are not legitimate (mafia, protection rackets, etc are also "jobs"). They are scam artists. The relatively honest people running the hotels and so on are also trying to make a living, as am I, and I would prefer to give my money to people who are actually working, not the middlemen.

Look vacant....

I got a kick out of the reactions I got when I would just look at touts with a vacant, spaced-out stare and smile at them. Sometimes I said "very pretty....." I'm sure most thought I was high (I wasn't). I never had anyone be very persistent after that, they would just look at me funny. This worked even in Agra. This little trick also worked if I just wanted to look around a shop without buying.

??

Face it, the fact that there is (sometimes) something like Bidri work or a clean 1 room shack for Rs 150 in a specific location in Goa is something you'd not have known in a million years without a tout.

Your comparision to 70s comments is a gross distortion. All he said was, it was job for them and you can choose to accept/refuse their services. & the vast majority of them are lousy salesmen who cant take no for an answer.

That doesn't make them criminal. being a nuisance is't criminal.

& YES. I do get the point of them being persistent.

ACKshully, being a nuisance is indeed a criminal act - in other countries. Their persistence has another name - harassment!

It says a lot about Indian society that harassment is not considered a crime.
If it were made criminal here, it would certainly clear a lot of street traffic.

In terms of the "chances of my giving" to hard-working people, the less commission money that's wasted on touts, the more I have to spend in the hotel restaurant, tipping bellboys, waiters and drivers, etc - which I do regularly, because they earn it. If you are too cheap to tip working people, speak for yourself.

You havent found the right way to say it. You say NO THANK YOU, thoes are just empty words, behind this words there will be a calm, "No you Donīt" kind of message saying "You donīt wanne fu** with me" and keep walking fella", "itīs not gonne happen!" once you really feel this "f*** you" with your whole beeing, yot necesarly beeing angry though... Than they will leave you alone, and the words no thank you combined with the fim look in your eyes will have them running.

Good point, that. In other countries.

Another good point. makes you look completely logical making this line of reasoning. First equating that with harassment and then tarring a whole bunch of people.

True. but then you wouldn't be in India, would you?

I think, the correct word here is Bollocks. What I wrote earlier implied that touts were a necessary evil. AND It's true, I dont tip people, (even a quadriplegic)
