help??
Hi guys!
need some advice. I have booked a course for one month in Kerala at Vijnana Kala Vedi Cultural Centre in Aranmula, found it through Lonely planet guide and heard a fews good things about it. But after I put through my deposit online I recieved this email back from the centre saying that there was a problem with my details and they forwarded an email from the 'payment gateway'asking for some information from me so that they can put the payment through manually. It sounds a bit dodgy. Here it is: Dear vijnanakalavedi.org Your order has been classified as a HIGH RISK transaction by the CCAvenue Risk Management Team due to incomplete/invalid/incorrect data submitted by your customer. "Manual Authorization" is required for this order. As per your standing instructions to the CCAvenue Risk Management Team, we request you to ask your customer to scan and email or fax you the below mentioned documents for verification of this particular order. On receipt, please forward the same to us, so that we are satisfied that this transaction is being done by a genuine credit cardholder, to prevent any subsequent charge back/loss of money /product/services and/or shipping charges. The documents required are as follows: - (A) The customer's credit card statement, which clearly shows the card number and the billing address of the card. The statement should be a recent one and should be of the same credit card used for the transaction. We only require a scan/fax of the header section of your customer's credit card statement, which contains this information. (B) A photo ID of the credit card holder whose credit card has been used for this transaction. This may be any one of the following: - Driver's License or, Social Security Card or, Passport or National Identity Card or, PAN Card / Voters Card. Please note that you have a maximum of 5 days from the date of this order to, comply or else the CCAvenue Risk Management Team will automatically cancel this order. Please forward the email/ fax you receive from your customer, to enable us to process the "Manual Authorization". On successful processing, we will notify you and change the order status in your CCAvenue Merchant Account Interface, to enable you to process the order and capture the amount. PLEASE DO THE NEEDFUL. with best regards I am not going to give this information, but has anyone else had anything like this? Im starting to worry.. |

This sounds fairly like the experience I had at the dentist last year!
I had a bill of about £700 to pay and used my credit card. I telephoned the credit card company and informed them that I would make the payment of so-many Rupees to the clinic, and they said, fine, we'll accept that as soon as we see it. I gave the card at the dentist and their card payment handlers wanted all sorts of stuff. I telephoned UK again who said, yes, we have approved the transaction, just tell the merchant to tell their bank to process it; it will be paid. So I did. Oh no, their bank couldn't possibly do anything that simple. In the end I paid some other way and those damn fool card people cost me nearly £100 in exchange rate difference. So... it is a heap of crap, but insofar as you are not giving away anything you haven't told them anyway, just proving that you are that person with that card, I'd say just do it. Welcome to India....

...I was told by a shopkeeper in India that, as well as the usual stolen credit card problem, there are also people who, after spending the money, then claim that they had lost the card, it was not them that used it, etc.... so the merchant or his bank can loose out. If they have a photocopy of your passport, driving licence, etc, it makes that kind of fraud much harder.
