Goa drug plant scam

AFAIK, the Indian authorities take a hard line on drug use and I have heard stories of police officers planting drugs on tourists and then demanding a hefty 'tip' to avoid arrest.

Anyone know how prevalent this is, and how easy it is to avoid trouble if it happens?

Does 'she' know generally how much they ask? Is it negotiable?

I have been fined in Goa for speeding before, I know its very different from possesing drugs, but when the police say you did something you didnt there is really no way of getting out of it. You have to pay up. A very corrupt country, its not a good thing, thats a view you might change when you want something and you pay a bribe to get it!

This story has been going around for decades. I remember hearing it over thirty years ago.

Whereas I'd feel inclined to change the thread title from Scam to Myth --- I'm sure it's happened, and I'm sure it is not a regular event.

And if it happens --- well, you are in trouble already!

unfortunately no myth...

They are much smarter than you think...some officers will even follow you into your room and check your valuables if the bribe is not what they’ve expected.

Just be careful where you buy your stuff and as Nick-H just said

"...if it happens --- well, you are in trouble already!"

And remember that the drugs which are being spoken of are illegal in India.

And no, we won't offer advice on how to get around that.

I think I've been misunderstood - I don't want or intend to take or posess any illegal drugs while in India - the question was about corrupt police officials who screw bribes from tourists by planting drugs.

5000rs - not nice, but not exactly a tragedy either.

In truth this isn't widespread or at least not as widspread as the stories would have you believe. Why, because there are just too many easy targets to prey on, planting someone isn't really needed. That's not to say it never happens but it's not something you should have too many sleepless nights over!!

Thus putting yourself a step or two away from the drug-taking community, and a step or two away from being picked on by the police.

Bottom line is --- if you worry about all the things that just could possibly happen to you in India, you'd most certainly never come here!!!!

Not rash at all. Especially if you travel the neo-hippy trail, have the backpacker look or dress-code, and partake at all in any level of drugs - then have you radar on 24/7 - a good lesson/reminder for all!

That Goan prison behind Aguada ain't no Holiday Inn from what I hear.
