Interesting blogs, Lemonwater, thanks for finding and sharing those!

Our drivers were not the same person, so guru must work with several drivers. I was glad to see that no one in these blogs bought the gems.

I was also taken to that factory/showroom. It's interesting that both the people in the blogs went there as well as the gem store. The items at the factory were beautiful, but I thought they were really overpriced.

Yes, beautiful stuff! We refrained from buying and found the exact same stuff for way cheaper in Jodhpur!
So, anybody looking to buy any of those beautiful, irresistible wall hangings, bed covers etc...you can find them in Jodphur for some of the cheapest prices in India!
We had a tiny terrifying moment in the warehouse in Jaipur actually (funny now). We had only been in India for 4 days and we entered the shop very reluctantly. The guys in the shop were overly nice and offered us drinks (which we refused just in case...we were highly suspicious!) All of a sudden, all the lights went off and we thought we were done for; both of us expecting to have bags put over our heads and robbed!! Of course, it was just a power cut...the first we had experienced in India.

If any readers do find themselves at a 'guru', do NOT take it in any way seriously, even if some of the info really hits home. The same info will hit home for many people. Just have a bit of a laugh and don't give it any further thought...though the dark atmosphere, the setting and the arrogance and unscrupulous nature of the 'guru' may not make for the most pleasant experience.

We are so used to being plunged into darkness: it is an almost daily event!

But I felt like you, on an early visit to Chennai, when the auto I was in left the main road and drove down a small track into a dark piece of open land. It wasn't until he drove out the other side (it was a shortcut) that I breathed a sigh of relief and stopped imagining cut throats and empty wallets .

Yes, we don't even pause in conversation when the lights go out. It's strange if you are talking to a new visitor who is surprised by the power cut and wants to comment on it!

One incidence i remember was when the power did not go until mid afternoon. The people of the house were worried and kept on asking why the power is still on.

Finally after few hours, the power went off and everybody had a sigh of relief...that there was nothing to worry and all is fine!

Do educated people actually believe that a gemstone or some quack who is peddling it in the name of guru or swami or whatever can change their fortunes in life?

Why oh why don't I feel sorry for these folks who are taken for a ride by these gemstone healers in India.

If some dude in the African bush or some illiterate dude in Bihar believes this crap, I can understand. Tourists from western countries asking if some XYZ gemstone healer is legit over ABC gemstone healer is making me laugh.

If you think a gemstone or holy healer can change your fortunes in life..... I've got some nice apartments to rent out on the cheap at the Kensington Palace.

Of course they do! They believe that India is full of gurus and holy people and that there is no crime here. They believe that because they want to believe it.

Hey ho... it would be nice if it were true!

Billions of people believe in the impossible and the illogical, whether it is their gods or their absurdly expensive hifi cables. They don't even have to come to India to do it.

Even my select collection of beliefs allows for such a person to be genuine, and I'd say, just because this guy is a quack and thief does not mean that all are. So, you can laugh at me: I won't mind, there are millions of people with beliefs that I consider ridiculous

It does seem, though, that either this guy needs to get some lessons in how to be the warm-and-cuddly-guru type, or the gang needs a new front man.

Dear All

First of all I want to tell you that Ajay is a good friend of mine and my guru. I know him since 3 years, I know his family, and I can tell you that he's a very special person without any doubt. First thing: he has, for sure, the power of helping people by seeing their energy and helping them focus on what has to be changed in their lives and why. He has this gift and helps people without asking for any money. Because he already has his business, the jewelry shop. Second thing: the energy stone. The fact of buying the stone is a choice, you can do it or not, but in whole Jaipur people know that those stones actually help balancing the energy and therefore it helps the person who wears it. What he told you about this money, that it is used to help children is true. Every year he gives a high amout of money to the Fior di Loto India Foundation, a foundation I volunteer for, a foundation that gives education and medical assistance to 320 poor girls living in the villages around Pushkar. If you will ever go to Pushkar you will see it yourself, the office of the fountation is in the main square. So please, once in a while when there is a good man with special, let's call them "powers", who helps other people in finding the way and 320 poor girls at the same time, be grateful for him to exist and to the fate that brought you to him. There's nothing more to say except that he's one of the most fantastic persons I had the chance to meet in my life.

The only thing I'll say to the above is that any person who is gullible enough to be taken for a ride by any healer/guru/special powers dude or whatever get what they imho richly deserve. I won't even start about the charitable foundation industry.

I can't understand which is the point considering that he doesn't charge you anything. You can speak to him, if you want to, and then consider or not what he tells you. Many people in Jaipur send him tourists because he's well known in whola Jaipur. That's it.

There is no charge to start with - and the problem is the emotional blackmail and the scare tactics. This is not unique to India, of course. I've seen this for years with tele-evangalists.

"You have problems, but you can cure them if you give me money." Guru asked me if anyone in my family is sick, and I said yes, my mother has cancer. He actually told me that if she had bought a gem from him, she wouldn't have cancer. Emotional blackmail. He tried to scare me into buying a gem from him by saying that the violet part of my aura (which is causing all my problems) will be healed if I would only buy a gem from him. Scare tactics. He also told me at the end (after I didn't buy anything from him) that I was not allowed to tell anyone what he had said or else the violet part of my aura (the bad part) would rapidly increase and make my problems worse. Scare tactics, again. Of course, given such a challenge, I had to tell everyone at IM and on my blog what he said and did. No gems, but guess what? My life has improved slightly since then. Sorry guru - your scare tactics won't work with me and I will tell everyone what you said and did.

It is not right to try to get tourists who may be jet lagged and who may not know about gem scams to buy gems by using intimidation, emotional blackmail, or scare tactics. If, after hearing about the gem scams, someone chooses to buy the gems anyway, then that's their choice. But at least they've been warned.

Why just tourists ? Why not heal and add energy in every jaipurian ? This way, the health care costs of the city would be drastically reduced.

The point is that some of the people who posted above felt "psychologically messed up" by the gem healers they were taken to, and some of them felt badly pressured to buy gems at hugely inflated prices (eg the OP mentions being instructed to pay $150 for a stone she thought was worth $15).

He actually helps many jaipurians too. Daisy, it's really hard for me to believe what you just wrote. I sent him many friends of mine, I met lots of people that had previously spoke to him and to me, what you just wrote is simply unbelievable.I know him so well that I would say you are lying. He's really not this kind of person. I met many false gurus in India, that's true, but I know Ajay and all his family and I know many goods things he did, and I know the way he speaks and relate to other people, that I simply cannot believe you. Sorry.

Hi Marzia,

Can I just ask something? Do you believe that people can heal each other through the use of crystals, and energy? That they can heal any human complaint or disease, even though "western" medecine has failed there? Even over the distance between continents?

Or that your friend deserves to take money from people, to fund his "charity"?

Many questions I know.

love and life?
