Kaan Wallah

Well this thread is hilarious. Someone mentioned it being only recently that they've seen these Ear-men. Quite the contrary. This is one of those ancient dying professions along with the massage wallah, street barbers, which generations follow in their ancestors footsteps.

If you go back to think since how long these people have existed to use such ancient methods instead of going to the ENT, you will realise what premium Indians placed on hygiene Centuries ago and what they still do. Most of the street barbers and ear cleaners provide an inexpensive service to the poor and the POOR who cannot afford ENT's make use of this. See the relation? Even the poor people in India get the ears cleaned with whatever they can afford!

Haha some of them seem to have found innovative methods though, startling with a cleaner near your ear drum, the poor guy must be scared to move!

Ear Cleaning

The comments brought a smile to my face. I have had this happen, the Ear Men have tried may times at Anjuna market. This year my brothers and myself decided to time how long it was until one of us was attacked by the stick in the ear. On parking our scooters it took all of 5 seconds to be approached.

More thread necromancy! Never mind, it's a funny one.

In case anyone else is also doing this, don't. As well as being utter rubbish (already noted here!) it has been known to cause minor burns, perforated eardrums and at least one house fire...oh, and, marvellously, a build up of earwax. Plus, the traditional "Hopi" ear candle? Nonsense. The manufacturers "bought" the Hopi people's tribal name to market the things. The Hopi indians are (or were) trying to sue.

I had this ear thing tried on me in Colaba today.

One guy tells me I have something on my ear, I say thank you and move on. 30 seconds later there's another one. He comes up beside me, tugs on my ear then sticks his hand in front of my face showing me a small piece of something white and spongy that he's twirling around on a large metal dental pick on the back of his hand. He starts talking, presumably to try and convince me that whatever he's displaying came from my ear. I have no idea what he's after, but a quick "F*ck off and don't ever touch me again" sees him on his way.

Unbelievable.

Then I went to Leopold's and watched people who had come all the way to India order beans on toast. The more I travel here, the weirder things get.

They also had an item on the menu called, and I'm not making this up

"All Hen's on Desk" (Toast)

All I could picture was an office full of chickens.

Happy to see this thread back again. I always enjoy it. If you want to see a photo I took in 1975 of ear cleaners in Connaught Circle in New Delhi, click on my photo link below and it's the 5th photo. Of course, it's the guys with the red "hats".....they didn't used to bother the tourists back then.

Sorry to hear it's become a scam. I think my husband let them try it--he should know better but he's always game for new experiences--now he wears hearing aids in both ears!!! Not connected....more likely the blastingly loud music he listened to when he was younger
