Our driver warned us about them. He also told us that they have their own stash of ear wax with them and they try to convince you that it came from your ear.

enjoy it while you have it

this I think is just a facility being offered. My advise, when in India, do not expect mega-infrastructure, expect personal attention.

...there speaks an earman, perhaps?

And when the personal attention is in the form of a scam? Which is basically theft?

You do what you want with your own ears, the rest of us have more sense.

yes you're right, and remember since this is the year of the earman, the Tourism of India Deptt is doing it's best to spread awareness among incoming tourists, that they can, and should, avail such health-services.

I had this almost done to me on Palolem Beach. I didn't see it coming. I was standing there ready to jump into the water, when I noticed a metallic object in my peripheral. I get starlted easily and jumped 10 feet high and looked back and gave the guy a look which basically said "What the f***?!". He tells me there is something in my ear and then this thread came to mind and I just told him "No thanks!".

Tee-hee! I agree that it would take some knowledge of the ear-wallah to trust him to treat your ear in an acceptable manner. But I don't agree that the metal implement is an odd Indian thing; after all the ear spoon is a fairly common implement to find in Viking-age and mediaeval archeological digs in Europe as well. And they're supplied in modern traveling kits: http://www.pmi.no/pmi/PageProducts.a...tt%20skinn ("øreskje"). But I think I'll stick with Q-tips for now. Scammers (as opposed to legitimate, though odd, traders) are of course to be avoided as always.

i once saw the ear entrepreneurs (my name for them) take a rather big piece of wax out of the ear of a tibetan guy at majnu ka tilla. that's the first place that i saw them a few years ago, when the profession was in its infancy. there was a two-man team, walking around with the metal devices on their ears, selling their services in the tibetan colony. i saw a lot of tibetans using them. the idea took off - when i was in india this last time i saw ear cleaners everywhere.

when the (same two-man team from a few years ago) approach me i always tell them that my ears are already clean, that i do it myself. one day i said, ALL CLEAN, smiling and walking on. After that, whenever they saw me, they'd say ALL CLEAN, grinning from ear-to-ear. from what i've seen they seem to provide a useful service, as long as they're not too overzealous in their job.

The euphemism "pitch a tent" implies the aphrodisiacs are effective. Sorry, I couldn't pass this one up without a comment

I never heard of anything less necessary!

What next? Clean Under Your Toenail Men? Belly-Button cleaners?

How come the rest of the world gets by very nicely clearing the wax out of our own ears --- or letting it drop out, unnoticed, as most earwax does.

Anyone who lets any guy who is a not an ENT surgeon poke around inside their ears maybe deserves whatever damage gets done !

actually, nick, i was being a bit facetious, and was also referring to what i personally witnessed with them cleaning the ears of tibetans who seemed to feel their services were worthy of a few rupees.

ear cleaning aside, i guess what i appreciated about seeing indians poking foreign objects into the ears of their tibetan customers, was how harmonious it all seemed, since i know of tibetans who do not necessarily like indians and vice versa.
