E-tickets for trains? Are they new? Problematic?

Can anyone comment on the "e-ticket" option for online ticket purchasing? I am going from Agra to Delhi. I have searched he guides, PDF's and IM, but can not find details on e-tickets.

I found this after my post:

4. E-Tickets
4.1 For E-ticket - The user can take a printout of the Electronic Registration Slip (ERS) and perform the journey, duly carrying the authorized Identity Card details of which were at the time of booking.
4.2 For e-reservations-the ticket can be booked up to the chart preparation time for the train.
4.3 E-tickets: E-tickets (Reservations) can be cancelled only through Internet till Chart preparation of the train and cancellation is not allowed at face-to-face Railway Counters. If the user wishes to cancel his E-ticket, he can do so till the time of chart preparation for the train (which is normally 4 to 6 hours before the scheduled departure of the train from the train originating station. (For trains starting up to 12 noon the chart preparation is usually done on the previous night). He can log on to www.irctc.co.in and go to Booked Tickets link and select the ticket to be fully or partly cancelled and can initiate the cancellation by selecting the passengers to be cancelled. However if the Identity Card holder in the original ticket is selected for cancellation, all the passengers in the ticket would be cancelled and a fresh reservation will have to be made, duly including the ID particulars of another passengers. Cancellation would be confirmed online and the refund would be credited back to the account used for booking as for normal Internet tickets. If there is any partial cancellation of ticket please ensure that the modified ticket (Electronic Reservation Slip) is printed separately. Modification on e_Tickets such as change of boarding point, change of Name is not permitted.
In case the passenger travelling against e-Ticket is not carrying the printed copy of the "Electronic Reservation Slip" during his/her journey, a nominal charge of Rs.50/- is chargeable by the TTE/ Conductor Guard in the train against an excess fare ticket.

4.4 For any claims on E-tickets after the preparation of Reservation charts, the user has to send an email at the earliest possible time to etickets@irctc.co.in giving full details of the ticket and stating the claim, which would then be processed by IRCTC with the Railway administration offline and refunds as sanctioned by the Railway administration would be credited back to the user's account.

Yes, e-tickets are a few months old, so you won't find much information on them in guide books. You can book your ticket on-line and take a printout and get into the train, just like you do with e-ticket for flights. Only difference is that when you are booking the ticket, you have to give details of the photo id that you are going to show when you are in the train.

I have booked and travelled with e-tickets for train before and I have had no issues. Is there anything specific that you are looking for?

As an added defense, make sure you have more than 1 way of showing proof of Identity. Say, your Passport photocopy is not accepted, try showing some VISA/MASTER photo ID Credit card. The more pieces of paper that proves who you are, the less likely you're going to get booted.

Not that, it has happened. It pays to be a bit defensive. I have booked 2 times for other people and they've had no issues with passport or voter ID card.

I have very recently booked E-Ticket for my wife and she told me that it all went well when she travelled. The all she carried is her passport and the TTE did not harass her. E-Ticket is rather better option now, provided we carry the required identity.

http://www.irctc.co.in

Its the Indian Railway online booking website and once you log in using your details, you will see an option to choose either i-Ticket or e-Ticket.

yeh eticket is absolutely hassle free and very convenient and comes at just a little extra price ...

make sure tho u need to carry an ORIGINAL of whatever id uv declared to carry

this clause is not mentioned explicitly in the ticket but i recently witnessed a ttr tellg this loud and clear . I later contacted the irctc staff by mail and they also replied saying an original id is necessary !!

take care abt this , rest is fine !!!

It does require that you created an "account" - a login name and password. That is the easy part. Then choose a time when the server is able to process your requests.

I used e-tickets on my trip in March and they are totally hassle-free. I use my passport as an ID and I was never asked to show it.

Help! On the IRCTC website I just tried to create a sign in profile and they asked for loads of information that I don't have, so I couldn't create a log in name & password. Any suggestions. I'd love to buy some e-tickets before our next India trip. I filled in everything I could but I don't have any business addresses or phone numbers. Is there a different form I should try. This is the one that comes up where it says "new user"

E Ticket

Can you book the actual seats using the e-tickets or are they assigned locally. With 4 of us going together that has become an issue

You can definitely book the actual seats and also the seat numbers will be allocated to you promptly, when you book.

If you have a hotel booking, you can try giving their address and phone numbers. For e-ticket, anyways they are not going to send anything to the address. Suppose your ticket is from Bangalore to delhi, give the 'place of stay' address in Bangalore.

just make up info for the log-in...address, zipcode etc. This info is only to enable you to get a user id and will never be actually used. I did just this 3 years ago and all is well
