In mumbai (half an hour off the plane) I was offered 'brown sugar'.

Gokarna = lots and lots of hash.*

Where I live it's mostly old shoe soles and washing powder they're peddling it seems (it beats ground-up glass however. No this is not in India in case you're worried -- I'm not saying it couldn't be.)

You got that one right. I always had trouble getting them to understand that it wasn't really uncool to ask them to not spread their &*^ stash all over the place. Pay the extra rupees for a place of your own! It's worth it!

I'd suggest you just get a prescription done in India, with help from a referral letter. In my experience you can use this prescription again and again!! So everytime your back gives you problems just pop down the chemist and get your pain killers!!

Buying opium for this would seem rather foolish and you never know what you'r being sold!!

On taking medicines abroad and as already suggested, I'd get a prescription (preferably in at least plain English) for anything more than aspirin really.

this thread pulled a 180... if you want to be offered drugs on the street, you better start growing your hair.
i have a long hair and beard (sometimes) and it seems i could not escape constant offers of drugs, from everyone you can think of, from boys on the street to hotel managers, to waiters, to taxi drivers, even other tourists.

Hm well I don't know. I went around as something of a punky hippie (or was that a hippie punkster) and I never got hassled much (I think?! Dude it's all gone hazy... ) May be a question of attitude.

I do, since I grew up there, and ironically for me more people try to sell me drugs at home in the Bay Area than in India! In both cases I think it's being female with waist-length dreadlocks. At home the dealers assume I'm Rastafarian (I'm not) and that I want to buy their stuff (I don't). Here in India, when I tie my hair back but let the gray show a bit and I'm wearing my SK, I'm just another middle-aged lady buying subji at the market, and they don't bother with me.

I also had to learn how to say no or ignore the various touts, dealers, beggars and such. Took some effort, but definitely worth it (I can now tell ear cleaners to skive off in three different languages!).

Ive never done drugs, with the exception of alcohol. But I always get asked if I want to buy drugs. It really annoys me, but I try to ignore them, then I just say no, then I say NO! and they get the message and go away.

i grew up in a dodgy area so maybe thats where I gott "the look" :-)

Once in Pushkar - late in the evening there was a knock in our rooms door... as we wasn't waiting fo anyone - we just ask - who is it? And soft girl's voice asked us - would you like to have some drugs??? We were a bit shocked - "No, thanks..." - but as we'd seen a lot of people in Pushkar, who looked like they need this service - i think the girl did a good business in some other room :-)

Heck yeah.. They asked me dozens of times.. I usually replied with "Drugs are bad, m'kay", hereby impersonating South Park's Mr. Mackey as good as I can
