Question Do people try to sell you drugs, opium, etc?

Namaste,
I have travelled to Mexico and as being a white middle-aged (young looking ) longhaired tourist,it seemed that I was always being asked if I wanted to buy herb, etc.

Is this the same in larger cities or is begging the primary scam? I am going to work on my spiritual practice, not to get high. How much of a hassel will drug sellers be? If hasseled to buy drugs is it a good practice to call for the police (how do you say that?) or is that just going to invite more trouble. Is the best practice just to ignore any offers?, and go on ,my way pretending not to hear of offers of herb, hash or opium? Are small scale sales widespread or just in larger cities? Thanks for any advise on this matter

It is best practice not to involve yourself with the police at all ---unless you really have to.

I think this is going to depend where you are, but here in Chennai (for more than ine year) I have never, not once, been offerred drugs. This may be because I look old, but...

And if you are, just follow Monk's adice!

You'll get much more hassle from people wanting to sell you all kinds of completely legal stuff!

Make that medium length hair, and it'll resemble me, with the exception that nobody in Yucatan tried to sell anything more than souvenirs. Perhaps they realized that my accompanying fiancée was driving me crazy enough. In several ways...

My one month in Mussoorie doesn't help in answering. It was obvious to the locals that I attended the language school, where a substantial fraction of the pupils were Christian missonaries longing to convert India. We were not approached by such dealers. It was difficult enough to find the place selling beer.

During some ten days in Delhi, no drug approaches, and I was walking extensively on all kinds of streets where I was the only European (except that I quickly retraced my steps when I realized that I was in BG Road). Maybe I look too healthy?

One (1) instance of begging was slightly difficult. A dirtyish but otherwise very nice looking young woman carrying an infant signed that she had no food for the baby. It looked like a school book example of renting a child from the ring leader to arouse compassion. I've been thinking of that encounter for some three years now, and still don't know if it was the right decision to tell her in what I hoped had some resemblance to Hindi that all my money was at the hotel.

It all depends what you attract.
If you are not in to drugs than you will not hear so much about them eather.
Stay clear of the Indian police and in peace.

You might think twice before renting a room with unknown "friends", they might be in to drugs more than you are.

I think it is just that I look permanently stoned: I don't need to buy anything!

Gregornot, I think you are worrying about a problem that you simply won't have .

if you start hearing/stopping for everything someone in the indian street is selling or calling out for, you will not reach your destination..unless aimlessely wandering was your goal....

millions squashed in cities..many do anything for livelihood~ if you are harassed seriously, then do summon a police guy...until then..you dont want to..just keep focused on your destination~

When if/it happens it's more like a hit and run encounter -not a hardcore sell. More of an under-the-breath query that you would hardly notice unless of course you were looking for it.

.. more concerning are those chess set peddlers.

Yes, I knew I had started to lose my mind and it was time to go home when I found myself thinking, "Hm-m-m, maybe one of those would make a nice gift for somebody. ... Actually, I think they are kind of cute ...

some really great advice when walking in the street:

ignore everything and everyone, do not allow anyone to engage you, shake your hand or put anything into your hand.

I hope Gregornot doesn't get to read Wazen's journal.

Probably put him off India for life!
