Good to know / remember, Les&Pete.
I sent about seven kg of books from Mussoorie by India Post (seamail) in late November, and they said it would take about three months for the parcel (very cute in its stitched pouch) to arrive in Finland. A lot of people were " - You chose seamail? You're lucky if you have your parcel by summer." The parcel arrived in less than a month, in late December! It was in Finland before I was in Finland!
I may have been lucky.

I had the parcel stitched by tailor near the post office, and the only problem I had in the post office was that they could not find FINLAND on their Airmail menu on their computer - FIJI, no, ...
I chose Seamail, though. (Cheaper, and more reliable, claim some.)

So, what is the usual period for things to show up through seamail (may be average time). I ordered some books from a store and they mailed it through seamail from Bangalore on Nov 21, 2007. I have not received it yet in California as of Feb 10, 2008 (2.5 months). When should I expect it ? Any clues appreciated!

Should enquire, with the relevant consignment reference numbers, of the courier company, or shippers, you sent it by.

Shipping by sea, though, does indeed take weeks.

With online tracking numbers & associated email alerts that courier companys can provide these days - the old 'shipping downgrade scam' should be much harder to pull off these days and thus less of a surprise if the consumer continues to do their due diligence after purchase.

Sorry, I should have mentioned in first place, the shipper used India Post. I posted in this thread because I saw references to India Post in this thread.. Hence no tracking number unfortunately

For sea shipment, bookrate, over festive, new years season from Bangalore ..... I wouldn't start to get concerned until after 22-24 weeks. With luck and a good wind, you might get it in 16-20.

Thanks guys, I got my seamail packet delivered from India Post and received through USPS during end of march first week. So it was around 3 months + 2 weeks. Around 14 weeks. In very good condition. There were several layer of packaging and tied using ropes. There was a note that it be treated as a Priority mail within USA! I am not sure who put it.

This thread is very interesting as I wanted wood chair while there last time.
My question is though does anyone think it be so expensive to mail back home to make it purchase worthwhile. It did go flatish for packaging.

I have sent five big (at least 10kg) packages home to Denmark, by sea, from Indian postofficies, and they have all arrieved with no problem. It took between 1-3 months.

Also I have gotten 2 packages delivered to me, from Denmark, in Rishikesh.

So Post India

I sent from Kolkata home to Greece a huge package with DHL containing masses of DVDs, books, T-shirts. We watched it being weighed and carefully packed. It arrived in around a month, all the contents perfectly intact. The name of the parcel we chose was "Baby Jumbo" which was the most economical for the amount of stuff we were sending. There was no queue at all.
