Currency Exchange

Hi again friends,

I'm sorry to post in this forum but IM wouldn't let me post in the beginner thread. Does anyone have a theory on this?

I'm heading to India in one month. I am overwhelmed with joy and excitment! Can someone tell me the preferred way to get rupees?

Thank you!

Via an ATM withdrawn from your account in the US, or exchange cash at the exchanges outside the airport. The exchanges inside the airports, closest to the arrivals gates tend to have lower rates.

How the heck do I do this in SF? Isn't it illegal to get rupees outside of India?

confusion reigns
Best way as said is by ATM .most airports in India have this facility ,Or exchange counter at the airport who will take most major currencies plus travelers checks . Also a few dollar notes as back up can come in handy .

PS check with your bank that there cards will work there .

Sorry, I meant an ATM in India. They're everywhere. Trick is to find a bank's machines which consistently works with your card. So take a hundred or two in cash just in case.

And if you really feel uncomfortable arriving with no rupees, you can probably buy some at SF airport. I bought some at a currency exchange at Toronto airport on my first trip - and paid about Rs 5 on the dollar too much for them!

You can get Rupees outside India by exchange services. But, the rate will be poor..
