if you can help it, don't use credit cards at all and if you do, make sure you see the merchant do the transaction in front of you. i used my card to withdraw cash at atm's, and carried a mixture of small bills and travelers checks. yes, i know the people consider the ATM fees to be high, but as it turned out, i just got my bank statement and the total for 3 withdrawals over a few weeks was about $10. in my mind, my peace of mind and security is worth way more than that, so it was absolutely worth it.
