Avoid credit cards at all costs
My initial post was based upon a misconception. It doesn't matter if the merchants charge extra. Using credit cards in India is ALWAYS a bad idea for fahrungis. I discovered during my recent visit to India that card companies totally screw you on the exchange rate--VISA sucks away three percent! Amex is only slightly better. ATMs and money changes give you a far far better deal.
