they are so cheap you may as well get one and use it, initially you will probably feel the need to secure you goods then as time passes and with more trips under you belt you will soon gauge whether it's worth using, I have found in 2ac and 1ac sleepers ther is no real need for using it but I still carry it on my bag and use my small pack for a pillow

i defintely recommend a chain and lock from varanasi as i can count at least five people i have met coming and leaving varanasi and haveing their stuff stolen. Apparently the trains going there are famous for it. One time I was at the station and even saw a tourist have his bag ripped off him. Thats why the tourist police are so funny about you staying near them. Don't get worried though.I've spent so much time at the station and not had a prob. Its a deterrent.

I'd say you should use it in daylight.
Sometimes the train will stop for 10-15 minutes. You might want to stretch your legs on the platform, buy a newspaper, whatever. This is exactly when your luggage is vulnerable. Possibly even more than it is at night.

I love my chain and padlock and I'm going to use them on trains here. I've had much more ripped off in France than in India.
