I`ll be traveling from Varanasi to Bodhgaya by train.Do you find it necessary to buy a chain and secure my luggage with it under the berth???? I haven`t done it in the past & think of trying it now .What do you suggest????

Now... I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I was told to buy one from home rather than in India as those sold at the train platforms are not as sturdy? Would you say a combination lock is better than a padlock?

The chains are really just a deterrent so I find the ones in India sufficient. Of course the fancy smancy titanium, moly chains from home will be stronger but I'm content with the Indian ones!!

If like me you're a total loss with keys then think about a combination lock from home. They're not easy to find in India!!

Paper soap, soap PAPER

Yep, I might just lose that key knowing me! That is exactly how I was thinking of the chains also - simply as deterrents. I've never heard of the titanium chains, but don't think they will be necessary.

My first train leaves from Nizamuddin in Delhi - would you say chains are easily bought at all Delhi railway stations?

Absolutely, along with, padlocks playing cards, blow up pillows (which alway develop leaks) nail clippers, pens, wallets, handheld video games, cuddly toys, set of sliding doors and of course PAPER SOAP.

Just look for the shops on wheels along the platforms, that ply the arriving trains that's where you'll find them.

There are also plenty street sellers selling this stuff, just outside the station grounds at New Delhi Station!! Avoid their Trains At A Glance guides they are cheap fakes!!
