Funny that I should read this post, especially when I was recollecting my undergrad days in Trichy, TN. I am a Tamilian, raised in Delhi, and spent 4-5 yrs in Engg. school. Now, the favorite pass-time for the local Tamil boys, when it came to messing with women, was something called "Kai podaradhu." Perhaps Nick should know this term. It literally translates as "putting vegetables", and what it is about is a guy feeling up a woman's breasts with his hands in a crowded location, esp. a bus or train. Mind you, not ONE of the north-Indians or non-Tamilians at my campus engaged in this behavior.

The funniest, well sort of, incident involved this douche-bag student who came back from the nearby town and was regaling to the entire men's hostel about his first "successful feel-up accomplishment." Now, the interesting part was, the teenage girl he felt up on the bus-ride to the campus was in tears and she happened to be a relative of a professor at the college and was visiting him. Thanks to the douche-bag's raving commentary, the news expectedly caught the ears of the professor, and it didn't take long for him to put two-and-two together. The student was summoned before the professors and severely reprimanded. He was lucky not to be taking a course under this professor, or else he'd be stuck getting F's. True story.

So yeah, Tamil boys...gentlemen? Hardly!

A bit heavy on the generalisation there; I'm sure there are many Tamil gentlemen of all ages --- but the experience of many women here is that there are a few too many of the opposite kind.

As a Tamil male myself, I wouldn't go ahead and generalize ALL Tamil males now would I, Nick? I was merely pointing out a fact that was common ONLY among Tamil males in my undergrad school. There were people from other states, and Tamil-transplants (like me) in that college and not ONE of them participated in this kind of stuff.

In addition, I was also shedding light on the fact that it's not only the North Indian males who are capable of more "daring" (if one can call it [i]that[i]) stuff when it comes to eve-teasing.

Mother and Father in Law

Ok, Imagine this .. me... only white woman, husband Indian. Getting out of the car with Mother and Father in Law, my husbands sisters and husbands and children.

Group of college age guys asking for a phone ONLY with me!!! My husbands WHOLE family says it is OK. I am freaking out but not wanting to insult the family I had just met, I stand with these guys for a photo.

It was actually kind of funny because my husband tried to get in the photo and they kind of kicked him out. Instead of getting mad I laughed because it was typical. I also laughed because they asked me in front of my inlaws without any thought about it. And my inlaws didn't care.

Unless they touch you .. just laugh it off.
