Be aware of Gorakpur
I had a terrible experience in Gorakpur station and the train towards Lucknow.
I came from Nepal to Gorakpur. There i boarded on a train which was completely packed. when I stepped in the train i felt that my wallet was gone. I saw the thiev with my wallet in his hands. i grabbed the wallet back and shouted at him. He already escaped when i wanted to beat him up. In the train there was really no plac. I had to sit in the doorway. I sat on my bag. There were so many people which were looking at my laptop bag. I was very sleepy but fought not to fall asleep. eventually I fell asleep for a short while. Only to find out that my laptop bag was stolen once I woke up. I just couldn't believe it!! The bag was so close to me and one of these crappy Indians had managed to steel it. In Lucknow I did a police report, but they gave me a runaround to different places. I gave that up as well. Just for all travelars who come from Nepal to India: Be aware of Gorakpur and make sure you don't fal victim of a pickpocket. Also protect your properties in the train with extra caution in this area. |

This is a must. Sorry to hear about your loss, but this stuff does happen. Sounds like a bit of a generalisation on Gorakpurians, and those "crappy Indians". What kind of train carriage was it? Cattle class?

second sleeper class. Thee was no place anymore and I got on it with a basic ticket for fast trains. the ticket seller told me this was the only way.
I've been on many other trains in other regions. Nothing ever happened to me there. But in that area. Eastern Uttar pradesh and Bihar. things are far more risky. |

You are very much correct. Most luggage theft and train dacoity occurs in this area. Travellers need to be extra cautious. One of my friends luggage was stolen near Mughalsarai. Her luggage was locked with the seat with a lock and chain, still the thief managed to cut the chain and take away the luggage. So, even if you lock you luggage, be careful.

I am sorry for your experience, Darwish.
But, unfortunately, what you say about Eastern UP and Bihar is all too correct. |
