Where would you go? (in Rajasthan, probably)

I'm planning a short trip to India early next year (I know, planning ahead) - about 2 weeks from Delhi and planning spend a few days in Delhi itself and also go to Varanasi, Jaipur, probably Pushkar for a couple of days. That leaves me with 3-4 days extra to go somewhere else and what I'd like to know is, where would you go?
It'll probably have to be somewhere in the area, but I wouldn't mind spending a lot of time to get there if it's fantastic.

I'm also toying with the idea of going all the way to Calcutta, but by the time I get over there I'll only have a day or two to look around.

WWIMD? (What would India Mike do?)

He he he……
So you are addicted ? Delhi to Rajasthan and Delhi to Varanasi these two are, as you know, different side. If it is possible to
1. Land in Calcutta > Varanasi > Rajasthan > Delhi and fly.
2. Delhi > Rajasthan > Varanasi > Calcutta and takeoff.
Try to hit Calcutta this time .

Indiafan : I was thinking about it but thought another viewing of the Lake Palace in a dustbowl would be depressing (we've got a drought here too). If there's still water there in February I probably will go to Udaipur
Somnath: I know but they have the best bangles in Jaipur and I love Rajasthan anyway. Getting out to the airports in Delhi and Calcutta seems to take as long as a Shatabdi anyway (and train is more fun) so if I do it, I'll go by train. But it's still doable. Do you think I could see much of Calcutta in only two days though?

Thumbs up Hi

Hi Guerik,
Thanks for the reply. You are right; train journey is the best . I was trying to say Australia to India (Delhi / Calcutta) by flight and rest of it by trains only. Any ONE of those two options will help you to use Calcutta as the entry or exit point and that would be the best for you (if Calcutta is there in your list). As you said in your earlier post 3-4 days extra, I think if you are able to plan your tour and add these days to Calcutta, you will be able to visit Darjeeling or Sikkim. Though Darjeeling and Sikkim combo tour is more practical (please have a look in this tour program: seeking Darjeeling info and advice ). And two full days in Calcutta, yes not bad if you are considering ONLY Calcutta.

Please try this it may give you some idea: http://www.google.co.in/search?hl=en...+kolkata&meta=

Thanks,
Somnath

We've just come back after 5 weeks in India, of which 14 days in Rajasthan. Udaipur was nice although the lake is dry - wonderful to have dinner at the Ambrai restaurant (outdoors). We enjoyed Pushkar, but bear in mind that it is a very small town and you may get bored if you stayed too long - I would say 2 days at most.

Dear Guerik,

Its is raining here in Udaipur and as I write this its a very heavy down pour outside. The Lake Pichhola has water and there are boats which are back in it after two years. You can look at this option.

Ona , you missed it by a few days . I also did not believe my eyes when I saw the lake with water and with just two days of rain. The boat which was grounded now carries guests to and for from the City Palace side to the Lake palace Hotel. The days of the SUV transfer thru the lake bed to the hotel are over now. The view from Ambrai has completely changed.

I've been to Pushkar before and liked it, looking forward to hanging out at some of the same places and meeting up with the same people again - plus I'll probably be there for Holi
I've been to Udaipur before too but if the lake's full it's pretty tempting - I liked the town itself and would love to see the lake when full.

Otherwise Calcutta's looking like a pretty good option though, I know there's no shortage of attractions there but was worried it would be too short a time. It'll still probably just be the tip of the iceberg but at least I'll get a feel for it - maybe I'll spend more time there the trip after! (I know 2 more weeks just won't be enough!)
I've heard about the problems in Bihar though, will that be an issue on the train from Delhi/Varanasi to Calcutta?

travelling thru Bihar on train is not something to be worried about. It is safer to travel on an AC ticket since there is a restricted flow on these boggies.

Yeah I was wondering about that. I had a nice little lockable coupe in FC once - but if dacoits with guns jumped on board I doubt the lock would be much help. Not sure the situation's that bad though?

Hello

Have you ever been to Bundi? approx 3-4 hours from Ajmer towards cittor/Udaipur. It is an excellent not to touristed extremely Indian town. With a great market and a lovely fort and Palace.

2 days = 1 night, Nah,,,,
The first day you're arriving & whilst you're arriving you're already planning on leaving. Fine if you are only passing through somewhere en-route to someplace else but to go to Pushkar you've actually gone out of your way to get there ie you've side tripped from Ajmer. 1 night just isn't enough,,,,,,,,,,,,
