traditional furniture or other?

Hi,

i have bought "conventional" furniture in delhi from the smaller workshops in areas like Vasant Kunj.

from Jaipur i bought traditional furniture (eg. shekawati style chairs and tables). It was expensive but i managed to haggle the price down by expressing disinterest. Tip- i went near closing time probably on a slow day. Perhaps the guy was keen on making a sale.

If money is not a problem then Delhi has a whole range of furniture styles and materials.

Delhi offers some fantastic furniture at affordable prices! Theres a pretty extensive furniture market at the end of the Paharganj (walk away from the train station to the main road at the other end of the bazaar about 1 1/2 km then left at the junction both sides of the road are crammed with furinitur shops/workshops)
The range of design is amazing take a look here I'm sure there are other furniture markets in Delhi but this is good place to start looking!

It is said that the first and last sale on a day are thought to be auspicious, so these are good times to do your shopping. On a more prosaic note people may just need the money harder than what they paid for it themselves a week ago. This is a real issue with the hard bargaining business that I haven't seen come up here yet -- you may actually drive someone to sell you his wares at an underpriced rate just because he needs the money then and there. Think about it and keep things in perspective.

Wicker ware used to be sold on the way from Main Bazaar to Old Delhi, from the station and northwards going to Chandni Chowk. Didn't lug any couches around myself but looked OK, honest working people too with little care for tourists or how to make a buck out of them.

*ehm ps I guess in concordance with Cyberhippie's advice that whole area is fairly good. Simpler stuff though but I wasn't buying nor looking for teak tables if you know what I mean.
