What to do in 7 days in Rajasthan?

I'm going to be in Indore, India for a Wedding on Dec 8 & 9 and my flight home leaves Dec 20th.

I'm at a complete loss for what to schedule see. This is my first time out of the States, so anything would probably be awesome to see.

Right now I'm working backwards. So I need to be in Delhi early on the 20th. I'd like to Visit the Taj and Agra prior to that.

Right now looking at WikiTravel and this website the options seem to be overwhelming. Every place has something to do. I've spent entire weeks in Chicago an NYC and still not seen everything, I don't imagine India will be much different.

The biggest problem I'm facing is exodus from Indore. There just doesn't seem to be too much. However in the region there seems to be: Udaipur, Jadhpur, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Kota for larger cities. I would like to avoid doing a flyby, "lean out the window" of the train and 'visit' a city.

Then to wrench it up, I found out that the Taj isn't open Friday. So right now, working backwards this is what I have so far.

Options for Departing: Leave Indore the night of the 9th or the morning of the 10th.

Options for Agra/Delhi:

1) Arrive in Agra on the morning of the 17th. Spend the 17th at Taj. 18th at the Forts and surrounding areas. 12th Back to Delhi and see something there.
2) Arrive in Agra on the 18th. Visit the Forts. 19th at the Taj. Leave for Delhi that night and just head straight for the airport.
3) Arrive early on the 19th or late the 18th. To forts and Taj in one day and go to Delhi late.

So basically I'm trying to fill the Late 9th through the very early 13th. I'd like to see the forts and some of the scenery. I don't want to go too far west, the Safari trips and Jungle trips really don't interest me.

I am a Museum buff, I think I spent an entire day at the American history museum in DC. I would be very interested if any place in the area had a similar 'History of India' back through pre-historic times. Or an equivalent of the Smithsonian Science and Technology (with Indian stuff).

I've sort of got Pali->Jodhpur->Jaipur->Agra->Delhi sketched out in my head if I can figure out how to get out of Indore.

I wouldn't even mind seeking Indian's "largest ball of twine" if there are any off beaten attractions that exist.

As you'll be in Indore, you really should consider Mandu, Maheshwar and Omkareshwar (sp.), from Omkareshwar you could go to Khandwa and get a well timed overnight train to Agra.

Otherwise, Train 9657 departs Indore (Wed, Fri & Sun only) at 08.05 and gets to Udaipur at 19.15.

If you are a museum buff, you must visit the Meherangarh Fort museum in Jodhpur: one of India's best.

Thanks for the replies so far. I've heard good things about Mandu from other people, so I'm going to do a Day trip out there the 10th.
The 11th catch the train to Udaipur.
Spend the 12th in Udaipur.

Now another fork in the road.
The 13th I can spend a second day in Udaipur and catch an overnight bus (Para Travels, any good?) to Jodhpur.
OR
The 13th get to Mt. Abu, and see that area, then take a train to Jodhpur.

Arrive in Jodhpur early on the 14th. Hit the museums And then on to Jaipur.

Then to Agra

Then to Deli.

If I only spend 1 day per city, I'll have a few extra days. Is there some place I should spend a second day? Or are there any off beaten cities on bus / rail routes?
