Volunteering in India (women/children)

I plan on making a trip to India from December 30th to January 31 2009. I am interested in volunteering with children and woman. I am a christian and there have been some attacks against Christians in the state of Orissa and the city of Chennai. Does anyone know of any volunteer needs during that time?

I'd suggest to collect some addresses of NGOs in the area you are planning to volunteer, get in touch with them and tell them what kind of skills you can offer. You can take your final decision once you are there.

Unless you are not volunteering for an organization who is used to foreign volunteers, one month is a very short time, as it needs time to adjust (for both sides).

In places like the Sisters of Charity in Kolkata you can just show up and volunteer for as many days/months/years as you want.

Persecution of Christians does happen sometimes (and it's always shocking for me when violence in the name of any religion takes place), but in most of the places people of different religions are living peacefully together or at least next to each other, that's something so fascinating in India.

Not in Chennai. There was an act of vandalism, which I think turned out to have been committed by a dissatisfied church employee. Our communal harmony here is pretty good. Our state politicians here may not be angels, but they have not stooped to communal division of this kind. Even the head of one of organisations so involved in Orrisa was quoted as saying it couldn't happen here.

Of course, I don't read every newspaper...
