Udaipur to Bundi
Hi All,
We'll do a 3 weeks trip to India in August and we’re going to travel without a guide, as always. Last year we did another part of India. At the end of the trip we're going from Udaipur to Bundi and on the way we'll see Chittorgarh. It takes about 3-3.5 hours to get from Udaipur to Chittor and from Chittor to Bundi it'll be 4 more hours. In order not to rush things too much and really seeing Chittor in a relaxed way we thought that spending the night at Bassi Fort could be a good option. Does anyone know if it's really worth it to spend a night in Bassi or if it's wiser directly to continue to Bundi? Once in Bundi: Does anybody have photos of Katkoun Haveli in Bundi or recommend a good place to stay? Is a 2.5 days stay too much for Bundi (having a total of 21 days in India)? We've the flight back from Delhi so on the way from Bundi to Delhi there might be other towns to visit, but for example Bharatpur has almost no birds and we've already seen Agra. Do you have some suggestions? Pushkar seems to be a hassle place, where it's hard to find peace or am I wrong? We're grateful for all answers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I did Bundi - leave in time (early morning), Chittaurgarh - arrive afternoon'ish, hire bicycle and see fort, get to Udaipur - arrive evening'ish. LP describes this as "definitely pushing it" & so I guess we did, I've a pic of me looking pretty knackered at the end of the day. Satisfied, though. No one seems to rave about Chittoor as a place to stay but I wouldn't have minded proving them wrong. Can't tell you about Bassi.
Bundi I could have stayed forever really. Pushkar's a bit of a tourist/"traveler" trap and tranquil at the same time, depends on your mood maybe. I don't imagine August to be very busy anywhere in Rajasthan.

And I would go to Pushkar. Though it is touristic, there's no place like it. It's very unique and IMHO a must see. Last edited by machadinha : May 21st, 2007 at 23:55. Reason: fixed quote |

Hi,
Am also a fan of Bundi... I stayed at Haveli Katkoun at Nov 2006. I don't have any pics but will do my best to describe the place: the restaurant/open dining area is surrounded by a lovely garden. The rooms are VERY clean, with private bathroom (hot showers), ceiling fans and (I think) air-cond as well. The 2 front rooms (the cheapest of the lot) also have private bathrooms, ceiling fans and hot water is provided by the bucket(s). The backdrop of the guesthouse is the Bundi Palace itself. You could enjoy your dinner with a beer at the roof top, marvelling at the palace. The food is simply fantastic. People staying at other guesthouses would come to have their meals. The family is welcoming and helpful. I personally recommend Haveli Katkoun as it was one of the nicest guesthouses I've stayed in India. If you do decide to stay, please book ahead. They will honour your booking without any advance payment. 2.5 days in Bundi is a start - I stayed 3 weeks. It can be easily explored on foot. Renting a bicycle is also a good option. (The bike ride to the 'Kipling Lake' was so much fun!) The market is also a good place to spend a morning. It was one of the few places where there were NO TOUTS (as of Nov 2006 anyway...) and I was free to walk in and out of shops just to have a look-see without the usual tugging or dragging of sleaves...Bundi is also good for (silver) jewellery shopping - check out the 'jewellery street'...No pressure whatsoever to look or buy. Bundi is probably one of the last few places that have yet to explode due to tourism. However you could def. feel the buzz bubbling beneath the surface...So as for the other places that you mentioned i.e. Bharatpur and Pushkar - they will still be here when you visit India next time around, but the quiet charm of Bundi might not. Hope this helps! :-) |

Katkoun Haveli
We stayed at Haveli Katkoun in Bundi. It's a beautiful little oasis and the service is great. I have photos on my harddrive but it's late and I'm too lazy to dig them out right now. Here's a photo of the guy who runs it (Ragoun) and his nephew though. He was a wonderful host and I highly recommend staying there.

Bassi Fort is really worth to stay there for at-least one night. Then you can continue to Bundi. Cotcoun Haveli is budget hotel, clean, nice family run small hotel with 7-8 rooms.
Best place to stay between Bundi to Delhi is Jaipur. Bundi to Jaipur is 215km and Jaipur to Delhi is 265 km. so it will be a good idea to stay in Jaipur. If not like Jaipur then you can stay at Neemrana fort but it is not budget hotel. Thanks. Rajuindia. |

Thanks for all the advice!!!
Right now I'm thinking of staying one night in Bassi, because it's "off the beaten trail" and Bassi fort seems to be very nice according to LP and Routard. Afterwards I think that Bundi could be the last place where to stay for 2.5 days before going by night train to Delhi.Haveli Katkoun could be a good place where to sleep!! I believe that Jaipur and Pushkar are too much hassle for us, and until now I just have heard good things about Bundi. Even the surroundings of Bundi are great!! ![]() |

I stayed in Basi Fort in Feb. and can thoroughly recommend it for a quiet, village stop. It is a little costly but you can mix your accommodation - some cheaper etc. It is worth a stop but book ahead because they have groups. Sounds like Haveli Katkoun is good for Bundi, we stayed Royal Retreat which was also fine but a little rundown. Food alright there too.It is nestled at the base of the castle in a great location. Everything was clean there in the rooms.
