Question Udaipur taxis, airport & lake

We have booked a few nights stay in Udaipur via an online booking service which seemed to be the only way to do it. Everything seems to be on the up & up however when we asked about getting an airport pick-up, the same service quoted us 650 Rs. This seems to be overpriced. Does anyone have some current information on taxi costs in Udaipur and more specifically to and from the airport? Thank you.

PS I understand the lake is now dried up and I wonder how wonderful, this formally wonderful place now looks?

the quoted price does not reflect the actual fare, but the service ... of course getting a taxi from airport will be cheaper ...

I took a taxi from the city to the airport for about 1/2 that.

I, too, have heard that the lake is dried up. But I would still highly recommend Udaipur! The people there were some of the friendliest I met in India, and you'll be able to say you saw where they filmed Octopussy.

Question Udaipur day trips?

Thanks for your replies. We were in Udaipur in the late 80s so we have fond memories of the lake when it was still wet. We booked our travel plans, which includes a rendezvous with some friends, before we found out that the lake is no more. Hence we cannot change them so we are off to Udaipur no matter what. Does anybody have suggestions for local day trips? Thanks

As I am sitting looking at it, I can tell you categoricaly that cows are grazing on three sides of the Lake Palace Hotel and if they walked very carefully they could walk all the way round. There is some water between the City Palace Complex and the Lake Palace hotel but you can also walk to it the back way.
Airport pickup two days ago was Rs 250 from the prepaid stand inside the airport.
As other poster said -- it is still worth coming to Udaipur.
The day trips are numerous-Ranakpur, Eklingi, Kumbalgarh, Nathwara, Devigarh, etc etc.
If you pass by Raj Palace stop in to say hello-ask for Madame from Namaste India Tours. I may be here another few days.

Smile Poetic description

Thank you for the poetic description of the lake's condition. It painted a picture for me. Thanks also for the up-to-date taxi fare information and day trip suggestions. All appreciated. Cheers

how wonderful does it look? November 2004

If you hadn't seen it is its former glory--you'd still think it was lovely wouldn't you? This is the best we could make it look.......
