Udaipur during Holi
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of Udaipur during Holi? I'm currently planning to be in Udaipur this year on Friday March 21 and Saturday March 22, along with two American friends of mine on their first trip to India. I've celebrated Holi before in Kolkata and Bombay, but these friends I'm traveling with probably aren't up for getting covered in colors.
Does anyone know: - Does Holi in Udaipur start on the day before (Friday) or is it Saturday only? - Will the tourist sights, like the City Palace, Ahar Cenotaphs, Nagda Temples, Monsoon Palace, be open on Friday and Saturday? - Will we be able to go out during the day without getting pelted? Thanks much, Karen |

Holi in Udaipur -especially in the Old town- can be quite demanding. Lots of young men are their waiting to splash water and colour on unexpecting tourists. Especially women have a tough time. Holi is usually celebrated with much more vigor in Rajasthan and adjoining states than e.g. in South India or Kolkatta.
The only thing is not to get disturbed is to stay indoors or go on a day excursion out of the city. The only bad day however is the 22nd as on 21st the people only burn the Holika, they do not play colour. Most sights will be closed on Saturday, not on Friday however. One more thing, beware as many young men take the opportunity of Holi in order to misbehaving with female tourists. On Holi many people are drunk or have drunk Bhang, an intoxinating substance. That makes them braver than they usually are and it often leads to fights, accidents or incidents of misbehaviour. As a rule, if you are staying in the city, I doubt that you will be able to avoid being coloured! |

Hi Anjuli
This time I will be joining in in the Holi celebrations in udaipur. I don't mind being part of the festivities. Will I be able to visit the Palace museum on 21st? Please suggest some must see and do activities in 2 days. Any budget accomodation you can reccommend? Which area is better - Lal Ghat or..??? |

Hi,
I can't really help with Karen's questions. In fact i'd like to add one since we are also arriving in Udaipur on the 21st and leaving on the 22nd to Mount Abu by car. Would it be problematic to get out of town on the 22nd in the morning? What should we expect? Thanks Jeroen |

City Palace should be open on 21st but closed on 22nd as on this date there will be special Holi celebrations in the Palace (you can buy tickets though).
Take care while driving on 22nd!!! I cannot really recommend budget accommodations, there are too many of them. A decent hotel is the Mahendra prakash, but it is rather Mid-range than budget! Must see is the Shilpgram Craft Village, a cute little village and folk museum in Udaipur and the Monsoon Palace for sunset. The views are among the best you can get of the city and the drive up is great!! |

afternoon till sunset is the best time for the Monsoon Palace.
Renovation work is currently not being done, I was up there a week ago when they shot a movie there and we could admire the beautiful decoration! The wildlife exhibition at the Palace is very interesting |
