Two weeks in Rajasthan July/August
Two of my friends and I, all students, are hoping to see as much as poss in our two weeks in Northern India (26th July-10th August).
Our itinerary is to spend one day in Delhi, get a night train to Jaipur and spend three days there before moving to Jaisalmer for another 3 days. Then we want to briefly see Jodhpur then move onto Agra before finishing with doing Delhi properly. Will getting night-trains be the best way to get around???? Btw can you use UK credit cards to book the train tickets? Any advice, comments or suggestions would be fantastic. Thanks |

I would suggest one day at Jaipur & include some other place like Udaipur or Bundi.
you may also reverse the order like Delhi-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Udaipur-Jaipur-Agra-Delhi. Good train connections. Delhi-Jaisamer & Jaisalmer-Jodhpur are overnight connections. |

Sounds like a good plan, the Delhi - Jaipur night train is a short journey with an early arrival (about 04:30), the following overnight train to Jaisalmer is a late departure, although you have time between these trains, it can be hard work arriving early and leaving late, especially with hotels, imagine checking in at 10 in the morning (and what do you do till 10?), you feel kind of under pressure to stay away from the hotel for most of your departure day (though they will watch your bags), I think the Jaisalmer train departs at about midnight, that’s a hell of a long day.
For this reason, I suggest you consider taking the early morning Shatabdi from Delhi (about 06:10) to Jaipur (about 10:40), this way you'll be checking in at about mid-day. direct from the train. I also suggest you have only 2 days in Jaipur and add the extra day to Jodhpur, I liked Jaipur, but feel Jodhpur was more relaxed. Overnight trains are a good way of saving time. You can book Indian trains with most UK credit cards on the IRCTC website. |

Jodhpur is flooded
I am from NYC with storng roots in Jaipur. I visit the place every year.
I would not advice going to Jodhpur at this time. Spend more time in Agra, Udaipur, Jaipur and may be Jaisalmer (it is raining there too). Also given the rains I would prefer flying oppsoed to using trains. Air Deccan, Go Air, Spice Jet are some of the best discounted airlines here. Please let me know if you have more questions. You can reach me on my US ph. no. Mod note: Telephone number deleted for members privacy.. suggest you use the Private Messaging system here on Indiamike Have a safe and wonderful trip. Quote:

I don't think there will be train problems due to rain in Jodhpur - at the moment the district around Pali area is under flood but I haven't heard trains are affected. I would take the risk and do your train bookings - you are travelling over July and August - Jaisalmer had huge floods in August for 3 days, but the trains got back fairly quickly soon after. These floods were very rare - nothing like it for the previous 40 years!! So,it is not that it is going to be huge rains all the time where and when you are travelling - you may have a completely floodless holiday! And do visit Jodhpur - raining now in Jaisalmer but so little of it it dries up rapidly. The humidity and heat is not so good however.

Khamaghani,
Jodhpur is not flooded at all, there is even no rain for last 5 days. It is Humid and land is dry, it is only some little drops when it rains and nothing els, Pali and Bilara r the two towns 80km dictane from Jodhpur on jaipur and udaipur route and they were flooded because of the monsoon river Luni passing these towns but water has gone down there as well, i dont understand the electronic media just to highlight their offices in Jodhpur they use Jodhpur. It is very Safe, Trains,Flights and Buses are running very good. Please do not hesitate to ask for more information . Regards Rathore |
