Two Udaipur's?

Okay okay.. I know I'm probably being retarded, but is it just me or are there two towns called Updaipur in Rajasthan?

One is about 100kms north of Jaipur..
The other (which I'm HOPEFULLY flying into) is about 150km south east of Johdpur..

Am I insane...

Haven't heard of this, maybe a small village or town.

The one a flight goes to is surely it.

Though this site says 260 km..(Jodhpur Udaipur) and it is a govt. site, I think.

I wonder what is the most popular name for a town or city in India?

Deogarh has got to be near the top of the list, I've seen dozens of places called Deogarh on maps.

And why was there 2 very large cities called Hyderabad? (before partition)

Hyderabad, India.. the common belief is...

Quote:
Theories explaining the origins and etymology behind Hyderabad's name differ. A popular theory suggests that after founding the city, Muhammad Quli fell in love with and married a local Banjara girl known as Bhagamathi. He named this city after her as Bhagyanagaram. Upon her conversion to Islam, Bhagamathi changed her name to Hyder Mahal and the new city's name was correspondingly changed to match it, resulting in the eponymous name Hyderabad (literally, "the city of Hyder").[2]

No idea how the now Pakistani city came to be known by the same name.

OMG now I'm worried we'r going to the WRONG Udaipur - like those tourists who tried to come to Sydney and got off the plane in some remote village in Canada - British Columbia or something....

How about Rampur?
You can fool anyone by saying I know (or am related to)the former Maharaja of Rampur

There's actually a selection of Udaipurs in India though there may be spelling variations .Again they're named after men named Udai/Uday +pur/pore.
My favourite Udaipur is in Tripura.I wanted to go somewhere REALLY off the beaten track and had a minor dizzy spell when I found there was no restrictions and no permit required though this seems to come and go. (If you manage to go you may find travel restriction in force because of political disturbances)

Here's some info on Udaipur, Tripura.

http://www.north-east-india.com/tripura/udaipur.html

Is Tripura worth visiting? ,you may ask- If you really want to get as far away from the banana pancake circuit and still be in India -YES
If you want to visit tribal areas -definitely.
There's not a lot in the way of "tourist attractions" except for those of us whose main past time is people watching.
It's possible to fly in then leave overland via Bangladesh - another area strictly for the intrepid nowadays.

There is one more Udaipur in the north-west of Keylong in Himachal Pradesh. There is a temple of Trilokinath near Udaipur.

There's a place called Mangalore in Victoria, Australia.

I have come across a town called Bombay on the Auckland-Hamilton route in NZ. There's also a place called Khandalah somewhere near Wellington.
