Could anyone tell me the best way to get from Udaipur to Mt. Abu? I know I could maybe hire a taxi or go by Bus but I would much prefer a train, if only most of the way . I know there's a station at Abu Rd . but India rail says there's no service between the two. Any one have an Idea

No direct route, you could go via Ahmedabad, but a bus would be 4 times quicker.

Train route is too long. You'll get the seat same day, but better to book 8-10 hrs before the departure time for deluxe buses. Udaipur to Mt Abu is 185 KM and bus will take 4-5 hrs to reach at destination.

I do not see any good reason to visit Mt Abu. Dilwara Jain Temple is nice but you can easily go to Ranakpur Jain Temple from Udaipur - Ranakpur is much closer.

I liked Abu a lot. But, note that the train stops at Abu station and you still have to go up to Mt. Abu. The Mt. is the trick. If you hire a jeep pay them a little extra to go slower and stop now & then to prevent motion sickness..

Mount Abu City is around 80 kms far from Udaipur, though there is no train service but the government owned which we call ST (State Transport) is best and budgeted way to reach MT.ABU from Udaipur.

How to go?
Udaipur Bus depot known as Udiapol Bus Stand, you will see many ticket counters there, just ask for Mt. Abu bus (only to people in charge) they often wear uniforms.

But the only problem is these buses or any bus local or private don't go till Mount Abu peak. They will drop you to the city and then you need to take further transport to reach the peak. They are easily available.

According to google maps, Udaipur to Mount Abu is 169 kms. I like Mount Abu. We went with the kids, 9 and 11 and we walked around quite a bit!. The main historic sites are Dilwara Jain temple and Achalgarh. I actually like Achalgarh slightly better even though the building is quite a bit smaller than Dilwara. It is a good 30 minutes walk uphill but when we got there we were the ONLY persons there and there are nice views
