So I'm in Jaipur, great fort the Amber, so the City palace too.
As I read, neither JAipur or Agra are great towns for walking on your own, I mean in the streets. The sites are great (Taj, palaces, etc) but the city itself is not big deal. Though some Jaipur houses are beauty, too much touts, traffic, mess, etc. Tomorrow I'm going to Udaipur, then Jaisalmer and Bikaner. Usually my guide ends the tour at 4pm, too early to go to the hotel, So I want to go on my own on those towns. Please suggest me areas, streets, where to go. I'd like to see typical places (no the landmarks, maybe ordinary houses but beaty ones), or bazaars, stores, anything Even at night, bars, restaurants, places just to see friendly people. and where is and is not safe THANKS! |

hi,
even in Jaipur I enjoyed a walk down the MI Road - a large shopping street. No interesting buildings but I enjoyed it nevertheless - feels very local and this is where Indians do their shopping - great window shopping - and not so many touts (not near the bazar area) great lassis on the cross roads with some other main street (can't remember)

If you're looking for nice buildings I think you are going to like Jaisalmer. It's all built from the local stone - even the new buildings have to be because of local building regulations.
There are no problems walking anywhere in the city, not a lot of traffic as the streets are too narrow and not many touts. Ghandi Chowk is the main restaurant area near the Amar Sagar Gate and is pretty busy in the evenings. |

for some night life check-out the 'Steam' at Rambagh palace hotel. Its a bar cum restaurant. A little pricey but usually has a good and friendly crowd. Usually busy after 8-9 and on weekends. In case u miss it this place is actually a renovated vintage train and platform that used to belong to the maharaja of jaipur..

I loved walking around the lakes in Udaipur. The newer part of the city is pretty dingy, and the area around the City Palace is kinda overrun by overeager tailors, but across the lake from there is quite enjoyable.
BTW anyone know if the Hotel Natural in Udaipur is still around? Spent a great week there in '97.

In Udaipur go to the old part of the city and rent a scooty or a moped. Drive it down around the lane to the bridge going to the monsoon palace. Strap on a backpack full of food for lunch. Keep going straight out of town and lose yourself out in the mountains for the day. Easy riding, no traffic, splendid views, and a nice way to spend the day.
I know you said walking tours but hey a scotty is also fun ![]() Mike |

I notice that your not going to Jodhpur, The 'back' streets of Jodhpur were wonderful to 'get lost' in.
The narrow streets wind and wind all over the place, each turn brings a new set of things to look at or buy, you very quickly become totaly lost, A wonderful place.

Thanks, thank you guys for all the tips.
I just arrived to Udaipur, just 2 hours ago and I found it WONDERFUL I-m at Sarovar hotel, witha precious view of the lake, athe city palace, etc. I even got a hindu ceremony or something like that. I can't wait for walking on the streets, seems so exciting and thanks for the Jodhpur tips, I forgot to include on the list but it-s my next stop. |
