Stay in Pushkar or Ajmer?

I'm planning to travel by bus from Udaipur to Pushkar on Mar 27 before catching a train from Ajmer to Delhi at 0155 on Mar 29.

Does anyone have any advice whether I should get a room in Pushkar or Ajmer? Are there buses from Udaipur to Pushkar directly or do I have to change buses in Ajmer?

How long are you planning to stay in Pushkar or Ajmer before catching your train? Even if you have to change buses in Ajmer, it is quite easy - buses are leaving regularly from the government bus stand for Pushkar, it used to cost only 8 rupees, and it's about 40 mins. there are also jeeps for joint hire (about 50 rupees per person) which will be quicker - 20 - 30mins.
Someone may update these details - it's been a while since I've been to Pushkar travelling by bus.

Direct buses would be rare, if it all available. Should be easier to get to Ajmer and then take another bus to Pushkar. Stay in Pushkar, of course.

If I arrive in Ajmer at noon and plan to take a train out the same night at 0155, is there sufficient time to see the sights in Pushkar?

How frequent are buses to and from Pushkar?

And how much would a private car cost one-way?

You would have time to go to Pushkar - I think the buses go every 30 mins. I've never had to wait too long for a bus, but this is a while ago and things may have changed. A car by yourself? I'm not sure.

Dont think there are too many "sights" to see in pushkar.
the temple/lake is the main attraction. Its mostly a backpacker ghetto..... a place to relax for a few days/weeks for those on long trips to India.
Unless you specifically want to see that particular temple/lake (nothing impressive in my view) its not worth a hectic trip.

The ajmer-pushkar road (through the hills)is quite a scenic drive though.

Hello, I recently came back from my India trip (3/16-3/30/08). From my experience, I recommend staying in Pushkar and had a nice stay. Both Ajmer and Pushkar are small towns, relatively speaking.

I stayed at Seventh Heaven in Pushkar and it was really nice. I have no connection w/ this hotel and am recommending it purely because it was a lovely place to stay.

In Ajmer, I went to the Dargah (muslim tomb) and experienced/saw many fervent religious Muslims which was a new experience for me. I was blessed with the corner of the blanket covering the tomb and asked for a donation. But the intensity of this place was quite an experience for me. I also went to the Naisaryan (sp?) temple and for just 5 rupees, saw this beautiful golden mirrored jewelled temple. It was so beautiful! I highly recommend both of these sites! It only took about 2-3 hours w/ taxi to see both of these sites.

The bus between Ajmer/Pushkar is a bit grubby and crowded but only costs 6 rupees w/o backpack or 12 rupees w/ backpack. You can also take a taxi but likely will have to pay much more. The bus leaves on the hour and takes about 30 minutes. The towns are only 7 km apart (2.5 miles) but separated by a twisty mountain.

Stay in Pushkar or Ajmer?

Well, I wouldn't stay in Pushkar, nor Ajmer. Thinking of the thread 'places in India you don't want to (re)visit: both are on the top of my list. They're just very touristy, filthy, aggressive touts/guides/beggars. If I were you I'd explore some of the villages around Udaipur, much more worthwhile.

Enjoy!

There is another thread on the merits or not of Pushkar - some like it some don't. I personally like it - it's an easy place to walk around, has charming, picturesque lakefront buildings etc.

I went to Pushkar for a morning just because my friend wanted to, I didn't think I'd like it. But I did -- I liked the market a lot. At least one shop with good quality old Rajasthani textile things (skirts, bags, shawls), different from anything I saw elsewhere.
