I shall be in Jaisalmer during the first couple of days in september and I want to go on a camel safari. I realise that most are for 2days or more but I read that you can go on 'afternoon' ones for a few hours, maybe sunset. As my time is limited in Jaisalmer this is what i wish to do, but as I said LP doesnt shed much light other than they sometimes do short safaris. Can anyone give me any information/contacts/details/costs/links regarding whether or not I will be able to do an afternoon/evening safari at this time of year?
Thanks in advance |

Chris you can definitely do a camel safari afternoon/evening. It is usually combined with a jeep ride out to where you pick up your camel then about a one hour ride to sand dunes where you view the sunset. You should on the way out to your camel do some sightseeing - Badabagh, Amar Sagar, Ludrva - all in your LP guide. The cost for this if you are a single person can be up to 1000 rupees if you are hiring a jeep/car. The other way is to go to the Tourist Reception office and if other people are going, I think it is about 150 rupees for a jeep to Sam (but there must be several people going at the same time otherwise you end up paying the full cost of the jeep) where you can have a camel ride for sunset - around 200 rupees for camel. There is no sightseeing with this one.
The cheapest option for sightseeing included is to go to a recommended agency (see LP)and see if you can join with a group of people. And cheapest of all is to get your hotel to arrange a camel to the door and you can ride to Badabagh from the city. Because this involves no transport out to the far desert it is less costly! At this time of the year it can be hot, so going late afternoon is a good choice. |

I did a one day one with the Desert Boys Guesthouse, where I stayed. Can't remember exact cost now but I believe it was around 600 rupees. That might have been the low season price though (it was mid May and it was 48 deg C)!
It was good. It included the jeep ride there and back + a whole day of being on the camel in the dunes + an amazing dinner. The dinner was brought along in containers -- simple pulao, but it was awesome. We sat on the sand eating dinner -- they also made chai for us -- and the camel boys did a little impromptu percussion and Rajasthani folk singing session. I loved it and I will highly recommend the Desert Boys' Guesthouse and their one day safari. You can check out the pictures from the safari here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/skinnylatte/tags/jaisalmer |
