Shahi Palace stay - price? Dear fellows, having seen all the recommendations for the Shahi Palace in Jaisalmer, I sent them a request for reservation. However, they claim they only have free rooms for Rs1050. Lonely Planet (e.g.) quotes Rs 650 max. They claim they "improved" the rooms... Do you think they are trying to scam me or is it true what they say... See ya, JCN

Guidebooks often have the prices too low. They don't always update them and are often reflections on what prices used to be many editions ago.

I have reserved for January and they sent me a list of rooms ranging in price from 250 - 1050. I reserved a couple of months ago, maybe for your dates that is all that is left, it seems pretty popular.

It seems that you have managed to score the best room in the hotel; we saw (exactly one year ago) two double rooms, both on the ground floor; one out the back for 350 rupees, and one at the front (with those great bay windows and the view of the Fort) for 450 rupees (which we accepted). 1050 rupees is a long way above that, I agree, but I would imagine that this would be one of the upstairs rooms, and -- judging by the value for money of the rooms I saw -- it may actually be worth it! It wouldn't hurt to ask them exactly WHAT your room has in it that the downstairs room next to the front door (450 rupees) DOESN'T have. And also to do some comparison shopping... while I thought Shahi Palace was just great, thanks to the helpful and friendly attitude of the staff (and that camel safari, different from everybody else's!), we were also impressed by the owner of Desert Boys (we visited for a sunset meal on the rooftop, and he showed us a couple of rooms -- quite lovely, but no view from the two we saw). If they are still offering rooms for around 400 rupees, you might be wise to stay with them and ask Shahi Palace can you join their camel safari even if you're not guests there -- as long as you're paying for the safari, why would they say no?

we paid the same for an upstairs room. its a lovely room with a little bay window over the bed and a view of the fort and attached bathroom. we were a little worried before we went because the price was more than the other rooms, but the other rooms are not nearly as nice for the price. they are very honest and reliable (we felt!), so i am guessing you are just unlucky and they are booked out for the other rooms.

See by yourself! Hi! I also stayed in Shahi Palace. My room was cheaper but it had no windows e.g. no view but also less heat. (I was there from mid august till mid october!) I saw the rooms for 1050. They are wonderfully decorated, have a great fortview and an A/C. The rooms downstairs are closer to the reception and might let in a litle more noise than the upstairs ones. I attached a photo of the room (from he homepage www.shahipalacehotel.com) and a few of my impressions f the location.
