In March, I am planning to travel from Jodhpur to Udaipur by car, stopping off at the Ranakpur Jain temple, and the Kumbhalgarh Fort.

The more research I do though, the more confused I'm getting!
I am trying to work out roughly the travel times between each of the places, and the order in which to visit them!

When travelling from Jodhpur, which of these sites do you arrive at first, the Ranakpur temple, or the Kumbhalgarh Fort?

Would it involve a lot of doubling back, to visit the fort before the Jain temple?

The only maps of the area that I can find are very confusing and contradictory and I can't work out the route the driver would take. Do you more or less pass both sites on the direct route from Jodhpur to Udaipur, or do you have to detour off the main route to get to one or the other, and/or double back along the same road?

In order to reach Udaipur earlier in the day, if we wanted to travel closer to the sites the night before and stay at a hotel, and then visit both sights the next morning, is it better to stay nearer Ranakpur, or Kumbhalgarh?

Many thanks in advance for your help

I can only help with the route from Ranakpur to Udaipur via car, its a good trip of I think 3 hours and great scenery, its somewhat like "Yorkshire" with miles on miles of dry stone walls it will amaze you, also some great wells on route really deep hewn out of solid rock. we then left Udaipur to Delhi via Chittagrth great fort there and well worth an overnight or several hours stay and the route is a good road smooth and more than one lane...not that lanes matter anyway in India

Hey abfab,

I will be doing Udaipur-Khumbhalgarh-Ranakpur-Jodhpur by car (with an overnight stop) in February - I could then let you know how it all worked out and answer your questions after. If you remember, please send me a reminder PM later in February with enough time for me to answer given that I will be in India and do not plan to be online more than once or twice a week.

Let me know if you found a good rate for hiring a car/driver.

Thank you very much for your kind offer

Am I right in guessing from your schedule that Ranakpur is nearer to Jodhpur than Khumbhalgarh?

Have you selected your stop off point yet?

Ive checked out a few potential hotels websites, but it is very difficult to work out from their websites as to exactly where each hotel is in relation to Ranakpur and the fort!

I haven't tried pricing the car and driver yet, but if I spot any bargins I'll let you know

Hi abfab,

I haven't figured out the details yet... I will do that when I'm in Udaipur. I think we will stay in Ranakpur, seems to be more affordable accommodation there.

I will keep you posted, good luck!

Hi abfab,

We are now in Jaisalmer. All is going well and we are having a great time. From Udaipur we went to Kumb. fort first, then to Ranakpur and then to Jodhpur. The whole journey might take about 7-8 hours. It cost us Rs2400 for a driver from Jodhpur to pick us up in Udaipur and stop one night in Ranakpur. We stayed at Shivika Hotel in Ranakpur - it's worth it. There's a website you can google.

Hope this answers your questions. Take care and have fun!
