Rajasthan-site seeing account

Information needed for the time required for site seeing (what to see?) and transport costs for these places: Any conducted tours locally available?

Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Agra

I guess it's going to depend on where you're coming from/to in regards to transport costs.

There are trains /buses from Dehli => Bikaner
Buses (and maybe now a train) Bikaner => Jaisalmer
Bus (or taxi) only for Barmer
Buses; trains & flights go to Jodhpur /Jaipur /Agra.

Time & things to see:

Bikaner: 2-3 days
Kani Mater (rat) temple; camel breeding farm; Maharaja's palace; Maharaja's museum; Jain temple (well worth a look thorough)).

Jaisalmer: 3-7 days
Prostitutes gate; the lake; desert trek (optional); the many havelli's; Maharaja's palace; British palace (west of outside the fort); the fort itself.

Barmer: 1 day - although I have not yet been there, I have been told there is nothing much aside from the new lake (formed after the last monsoon flood) and a small village

Jodhpur: 2-3 days
Maharaja's palaces (old and new); clock tower & market; Durga temple (~30km. outside of town)

Jaipur: 2-3 days
Palace of the winds; Maharaja's museum; Amber Fort; gardens; zoo (if only for the tiger enclosure); Edward & Victoria Museum (no photos permitted)

Agra: 1-2 days
Taj Mahal; Agra Fort; baby Taj; Fatephur Sikri

Locally conducted tours are available - but this depends on what you are looking for. If you want a State run tour (such as New Delhi Tourist Development Commission), I'm not sure if they operate in these particular cities.

You can be guaranteed that there will be local touts offering you tours of the area. Be warned that some will take you to emporiums after you have finished the tour and they will get commissions from the places you visit.

Cheers
Zoltan

Zoltan has covered most for you here, Bhaswaran. Tour guides are available in Jaisalmer, you must check that they are approved (they have an identification and approval stamp etc. from the local Tourist Information Centre) They should cost no more than around 200 -250 rupees for a good half day from what I remember rightly. A full day is about 400 I think. As for Barmer, there is nothing much there except good block printing for sheets and fabric. Also some temples for which it takes nearly half a day to get permission to go to them. Since I'm not in Jaisalmer off the top of my head I can't remember the name - they are ancient Jain ones and near the border area. Getting the permission is a pain in the neck.

Better I leave Barmer then and invest the time in Jodhpur or Jaisalmer for a desert trek. Need info now about desert trek and organisers and charges.

I'm also planning to go to jaisalmer in july and was wondering if it'll be possible to do a desert trek then? or will the monsoon rains make it impossible/unenjoyable?
thanks

Depends if rain comes - and if it does usually doesn't come too much in July. July can be very hot and humid, so you may only want to go out late afternoon, overnight and come back in the morning before the full heat of the day. Very rarely are safaris cancelled.
