Rajasthan route - Jodphur/Mt. Abu or Bundi or both?

Hi,

I going to Delhi next week and have more than three weeks before I fly on to South India. I like to travel slow and I enjoy much more being somewhere than going there. My original plan was to go from Delhi to Agra, Barathpur, Jaipur, Puschkar, Jodphur, Mt. Abu, Udaipur.
Now I wonder whether I should skip Jodphur and Mt. Abu (about Jodphur I have read mixed reports, and Mt. Abu is long hours by bus and probably cold in February and I am not sure how much there really is to do). Instead I am now considering going from Puschkar to Bundi/Kota, Chittorghar, Udaipur. If there is time left I could still go to either Mt. Abu or Ranakpur from Udaipur. What do you think - which route is more interesting and pleasant and what would you skip? I don't see how I can visit Jodphur a n d Bundi withour going back and forth if I finish in Udaipur. Any suggestions?

You should certainly try to fit Bundi into your schedule - it's a real gem. But it's going to be difficult to do that and also see the other places in your itinerary.

The fort in Jodhpur is a must-see, so don't be tempted to miss that.

I'd suggest missing Pushkar. It's a vile little place with little, if anything, to justify stopping there. Unfortunately, skipping Pushkar is not going to help your itinerary. Maybe missing Mt. Abu is a better option, for the reasons you give.

You could go straight from Jaipur to Jodhpur, then to Pushkar (train from Jodhpur to Ajmer, then bus). From Pushkar you can take a car to Bundi (180km; 4 hr; 1800Rs.) and then continue to Udaipur (train to Chittaurgarh, then bus).

If you have 3 weeks you have plenty of time to see most of what you are proposing - I would certainly see Mt Abu - by the time you are there it isn't going to be so cold - and do the route as suggested by Mitchell. If you can take a car between jodhpur and Udaipur stay the night at Ranakpur - you would also be able to visit khumbalgarh as well on the way to Udaipur if you have a car. Mt Abu has some amazing Jain temples with wonderful carving - Dilwara Temples - that are well worth the visit. Pushkar - I like - very easy to walk about and charming scenery around the lake.
