Rajasthan - palace on wheels
I want to do a quick (eg 8 day) visit to Rajasthan around Nov 2 from Delhi.
One option is palace on wheels. Has anyone tried this? One is stuck with their itinerary - but get to cover a lot of ground. Another is using local train/bus . Any comments? Highlights? Regards Kit in NZ |

What's not to love?
Kit,
Haven't done the Palace on Wheels personally, but have heard its quite the ride. Check out their website at http://www.palaceonwheels.net/new/home.htm I think the going rate is around US $400 a night. You can get from Delhi to Jaipur for $400 on POW or around $30 for the train (first class). It all depends on your style of travel and pocket book! |

rajasthan by train
As an alternative to Rajasthan by palace on wheels I checked out train timetables on http://www.trainenquiry.com/TrainsBetwImpStation.aspx
But it gives no train between Jodpur & Udaipur. eg I could go Delhi - jaipur - jodpur - jaisalmer - jodpur - jaipur - udaipur - jaipur - delhi Is there a way with less to-ing & fro-ing to visit these places? I gather train is preferable to bus but maybe jodphur - udaipur return by bus would shorten all this. Kit in NZ |

rajasthan on my own
Well Palace on wheels is full for the week I wanted to go so will do it on my own. Tree has offered to book the tickets for me.
Can anyone suggest how best to cover all or some of these in 10 days or so starting & ending in Delhi? (I Now plan to arrive late Nov 2 & leave Sat Nov 13). Jodhpur,Udaipur, Jaisalmer & some of these (LP=LonelyPlanet 2003): Pushkar (LP 583), Ranakpur (LP 610, 3hr by bus N of Udaipur), Kumbalgarh (LP 609- skip?),Chittorgarh (LP 597). Have seen the Taj so will skip it this time. Kit in nz |

You can do Delhi - Jaisalmer - Jodhpur - Udaipur - Jaipur - Delhi all by train; with no backtracking; ie. not visiting the same place twice.

thanks shimla - that's invaluable info
What's the best way to insert Chittorgarh,Ranakpur,Pushkar into that itinerary Delhi - Jaisalmer - Jodhpur - Udaipur - Jaipur - Delhi? eg I could go Udaipur - Chittorgarh (LP 597, 3h20 train to U,)-[Ajmer LP580]-Jaipur What about the other 2? What do you think? regards kit in NZ |

Hi, I'm planning to visit India in 22 Nov and planning to spend 20 days there. Haven't actually decide on my itinaries but will be arriving in Delhi then visiting to Agra. Other than that, planning to spend some time in kerala, goa then to Bombay.
Seriously need help on places that I should not missed and in planning my itinaries. Mode of transport would probably be on train and if comfortable would be trying to drive. I would be with my wife and both of us enjoy historical sites and beaches. thanks giant |

To member 'services'.
It is not a good idea to have wonderful photo's of the 'Palace on Wheels' at the top of your 'rail tours' webpage when the trains you are using are ordinary Indian Railways trains. You may also want to edit the page a little, the Chetak Express no longer calls at Jaipur, you could use the Lake City Express instead.

The itinerary suggested by SHIMLA is the maximum you can do in 8 days, any more and you wouldn't enjoy your time in India, fitting in Jaisalmer & Udaipur into an 8 day visit is difficult, you would have to miss one of them to be able to add any other places. Giant 20 days... Delhi, Agra, Kerala, Goa, Mumbai, Delhi, That would be a minimum 7 full days on the train, it takes about 48 hours to get to Kerala from Delhi. You need to rethink your plans. |

Thanx
thanx for the reply. Yup think so too...a little too ambitious for 20 days. I would probably be discovering the north starting from delhi down to agraa and west to jaipur and up north into jaiselmer and was wondering whether to go to Shimla. But, once i have finalised my itinaries, of course with the help of various useful suggestions from many people in this forum, I post them again Presently, just found out that tickets out from Singapore has been fully booked all the way till end november. BUt, manage to get myself on waiting list on Air INdia...never been on that plane before so what do you guys think of Air India?
By the way, tis site is indeed superb! |

Singapore Airlines (I think thats the name of the company) have just started direct flights from between Singapore and Amritsar, the flights will be 3 days a week and may be worth checking out. |
