Kumbalgarh's convently in between Udaipuir and Ranakpur. I shared a taxi with some others I met in Ranakpur. Careful- Since I'm one of those slow pokes (unthinkable to find me in a desi tour group) the chowkidar forgot about me and I got locked in.
Thanx to the superb acoustics, I was able to shout to the lot below, or I might be a lot thinner than I am!

There is a very upscale hotel nearby and not much else. Aouhd (sp?)
Hotel Aodhi which used to be a hunting lodge.

I did walk some of the ramparts and thought it was the Great Wall of China since they extend far into the hills. The cows actually stopped what they where doing and followed me with their gaze like they had never seen a foreigner before.

I had a nice puja after waking up the woman who was tending the puja area, at that time my hindi was better and I was already in India for a few months and for the first time I actually understood everything she said. Maybe it was the magic of Puja.

I also had to wake up the keeper to get inside and left my signature in the guestbook. I remember that it was like three or four months since the last person had signed it.

Exploring the temples dotting the hillside I felt like no one else had ever been in them. They were in a good state of decay and many carved objects were just laying around on the floor. If it wasn't for the smell of guano (bat crap) I would have explored them more. Bats+rabies=bad news.

Thanks for the great photos NIM.

I don't think the secret will really get out since you really got to put some effort into getting there.

Great post sayswho!

Wanna tell us more about where you stayed? Did you do the train or car/driver? We'd love to hear more about your trip!

Also, Steven_ber, is it a good idea for those of us who will be in Rajasthan over X-mas and NY to book our trains in advance, or will we be cool with getting our tix there?

Thanks guys!
Ace

Book your tickets in advance, all sections are busy at this time of year, but Jaipur - Udaipur is a particularly busy section. (or it was when I was there in December 01).

We met a fellow traveler that said that Bundi was a very special stop for him. He said he enjoyed it more than many other cities.

We went to Bharatpur a couple weeks ago. It was very nice. Stayed at the Kirin Guest house (ph. 23845) which is a quick bicycle ride (they supply) to Keleado Nat. Park. Accomodations were simple, but clean. They are very nice hosts. The lake at the park is falling victim to drought. Normally at 11km it is down to 1 km. in size. But we had a great naturalist guide arranged by the Kirin and saw a lot of interesting fauna and fowl. What was most special was the peaceful nature of the park.
