Hello,
I'm contemplating hiring a driver to take my husband and I through Rajasthan on a 15-day trip. We're American but, luckily, my Indian cousin has a friend in the travel industry who found a driver for us. The cost for the 15 day trip was quoted at Rs. 32000 ($660 USD). The price includes: 1. fuel 2. complete state passenger taxes 3. parking and toll taxes 4. insurance 5. driver's expenses (food and overnight stay) Since we're visiting many cities, it seems like a good idea to hire one trusted driver. Is this a fairly decent price for something of this nature? Or are we better off hiring different drivers at each or our guesthouses? thanks!! |

Dear Sham_S,
You are much better off with your current option itself. Since the driver comes from a company which is known to your Indian cousin, you will get the best experience. Hiring different drivers means hassles and unwanted head aches. Forget it. The price too sounds nominal for 15 days trip and that too it covers everything. Enjoy your trip and please do write your experience so that a lot of visitors to this forum will be benefitted. Regards B.S.Prasad |

If you hire a driver for each separate journey you always have to pay his return trip, so it will be more expensive. One other thing, sometimes the tariff is based on a max kilometers per day, and you have to pay extra if you day's distance exceeds this. So you better inform before about this condition. |

Yes, I agree - it seems very fair to me. I paid 21,000 about 18 months ago for a 10 day trip using a Toyota Innova (there were three of us) and this also included air conditioning although we barely used it.

.. i really dont know.most of time you end paying for drivers food and drivers sleep in car.Funny though, could happen when i went once in JK ,there was municipal tax or something and we ended paying it as it wasnt part of contract. Hiring one driver is best but you are the one to judge on price. |

Santos - I think that price is quoted for a car for 15 days - it is common to pay around 100 - 150 rupees per day for the driver's food and expenses. The inclusions seem fine to me. The price includes the car, we are assuming, because for this price for 15 days you would have a car and driver.

thanks to everyone for your feedback. Yes, this seemed like a good deal to me and the best way to go. I was just unsure but feel better about it now. Looking forward to going to Rajasthan!

Hi , I had a similar question:
I got a quote of Rs 5,200 all inclusive for Tata Indica Airconditioned + driver 2 days in and around Jaipur About 350-400km drive The service provider said Rs 4200 for car and Rs 1000 service charge. Does this sound reasonable? |

Seems high to me - going on a car for a day here including driver it is around a maximum of 1500 rupees per day. For two days you would be looking at 3000 rupees maximum, I think.
Zsonia - are you still in US? My suggestion is not to book ahead via internet in your case. Wait until you get to Jaipur and then ask where you are staying to help you. I think you will find it will be much cheaper than your quote above. Normally cars are hired by kilometre with return to base, and an Indica can be rented for 5.5rupees per kilometre. A charge of around 100 -150 rupees is added on for the driver per night, and you can pay yourself any tolls and taxes as you go. |
