Rajasthan-Delhi-Agra

After reading lot of threads here, I made my Rajasthan itinerary and arranged part of my travel. I update this thread with feedback later.

Feel free to ask any question and happy to help.

Dec 14th 2009: Arrival Chennai by train and stay at Hotel Chandra Park for Rs 900. (www.hotelchandrapark.com) just opposite to Egmore Train station. Visiting nostalgic places and friends, eat at saravana bhavan, watching movie etc.

Dec 15th: Chennai to Udaipur – By Kingfisher Flight booked using yatra.com, paid using icici bank account (kingfisher website did not accept my credit card)– Ticket cost Rs 4938 – Timing: starts at 09:00 am and reaches at 13:55 PM. In Udaipur, visiting monsoon palace, dance program, walking around lake as per available time.

Hotel at Udaipur:
Booked at Udainivas for Rs 800. Airport pickup Rs 400. Udainivas was prompt to advice me for prepaid taxi as it is cheaper. But I pay for convenience.

Dec 16th:
Udaipur – City palace, Lake Palace etc...

Dec 17th: Late in the morning - By car - visiting Ranakpur, kumbalgarh and reach Jodhpur and take 11:00 PM train to Jaisalmer. Car has to be arranged on the spot.

Dec 18th: Take rest and fort sight seeing. Evening Camel ride to dunes and sleep.

Jaisalmer Hotel: booked at Shahi Palace as a whole package including camel trip. Hotel room costs Rs 1500 for 2 days. For camel safari, Rs 1500 for each person.

Dec 19th: Return from Dunes and enjoy dinner.

Dec 20th: Again sight seeing or small camel trip until evening and take train to Delhi which starts around 5 PM.

Dec 21st: Reach Delhi and shopping at Connaught place.

Delhi Hotel:
Booked at Cottage Yes Please for Rs 900(Double Room).

Dec 22nd:
Agra trip. Not decided whether by car or by Shatabti train. Cottage yes please offered Rs 4500 for one day trip. Shatabdi costs Rs 1500 for 2 persons. So I would spend extra money on car to see nearby places as well. I don’t like waking up early to catch shatabdi (starts at 6:15 AM) and I would like to enjoy meals at Highway Daba’s.

Dec 23rd:
Sightseeing Delhi and perhaps I hire a car. Offer was Rs 800 for 80 km inside Delhi. Evening again shopping in Tibet market.

Dec 24th:
Flight to Chennai but not booked yet. Need to decide whether to take early flight to Chennai and spend there or take late flight to Chennai and spend the day in Delhi.

Jet airways have optimum time for us. Morning 10:15 AM and reaches at 01:00 PM.

Few more information’s:

1. We have only 10 days.

2. Already I have seen Jodhpur and Jaipur. My wife is not interested much. So plans are according to my wish.

3. Most important for me is camel ride experience. For my wife, seeing Tajmahal and I have seen it already. Shopping in Delhi is most important for both of us.

4. Used ixigo.com and yatra.com for booking. I am very satisfied so far. For trains, I will use irctc.co.in.

5. All the above hotels are very prompt in email reply. I booked based on reviews from here and Trip advisor and it is in my budget.

6. If possible, planning for dinner or lunch in Lake Palace hotel. Or at least, coffee.

7. Will not rush and it is ok if we don’t see some places. Just need to take care of train connections.

TRAVEL PARTNER:

I look for 2 more people to share the car on Dec 17th from Udaipur to Jodhpur and on 22nd from Delhi to Agra and return. If anyone interested, please post here. Agra trip is flexible by one day. Either 22nd or 23rd.

Thanks to all who had contributed and special thanks to Steven Ber for his train informations. (Information about Lalgarh junction near Bikaner is simply superb although I don’t go to Bikaner due to short of time. Another tip about train to Marwar from Udaipur and then Marwar to Jodhpur is also great).

Bye for now.

I think your itinerary looks great, Peek. Nicely spaced out and planned.
Re Agra - If you can afford it I would do the car trip - provided within that cost you can use the car for all Agra sightseeing and a trip to Fatehpur Sikri, plus Mathura on the way back. This way it is more convenient and will be faster for you. You will see most sights worth seeing, and at an easy pace, with a car.

You may buy at Kamla Nagar Market, near Delhi university..

Many good showrooms with good quality stuff and right prices...

Monte Carlo is a good brand name in pullovers...

Rajouri Garden which is on the Dwarka Metro Line is also a good market for buying at local prices - not that it's much help for you Peek, but I bought a Monte Carlo cardigan (brand mentioned by Delhiwala!) for half price up in Mussoorie in the summer time.

I've bought shirts for Mr K at Rajouri Garden with an 80% discount - real bargains. It's an easy place for shopping, less hassle than markets like Karol Bagh etc.

Thanks Aishah and Delhiwala,

I will look for those shops and brand.

Another question:

I plan to sleep overnight under the stars(jaisalmer). How comfortable it will be considering the weather in December. Any experiences???

We also went in December only. Our Sam camel safari package included desert camp cultural program + dinner. It was quite cold in the desert...

We didn't sleep under the stars as we returned to Jaisalmer after dinner.

Early December is okay - mid to late December is cold. You can do it, but have a woolly cap, and make sure your safari operator supplies plenty of quilts! The other thing is the later in December it becomes the more dewy and damp it will be.
