Hey Amimal, I'm not a veteran (been to Pushkar once before) but I don't think it matters if you get there a few days early or not...Pushkar is in full camel fair swing, prices will be high and stay that way. Saying that, small guesthouses usually charge around 500 rupees, so I think triple that for the fair. So, more expensive, but you could find something for that. But I would book now! You might have to pre-pay part of the money upfront. Good luck!
It might be the best of times or the worst of times...but it's the only time you've got!

I've been out at the Santa Barbara Old Spanish days enjoying the event and shooting photos.

Vaqueros waiting on their horses for the parade to began:

There's more that 500 horses in this parade:

As for Pushkar, I may be going again this year.
As for places to stay, I never had any problems finding one even on the last few days.
The price are up a little when the camels start coming in, 5 days before the end of the fair the hotel prices can double, 3 days before the end the prices may double again.
Only those who will risk going too far
can possibly find out how far one can go.

Thanks cameleer. I am more wanting to ensure I have something booked as it my wife's fist time to india so figured it best to get something decent in advance. So please any suggestions appreciated. Any favorite places?

Also any help regarding the best dates (two days between oct 31st and nov 3rd). The fair according to tourism is nov 2nd - 10th. But have heard coming prior to the start could be an experience in itself.

Also anything special on the opening day ( I would assume that's the 2nd or 3rd?) that worth seeing.

Thanks so much in advance

I stay in a budget place near the mala grounds to be close to the action where I can go out at any time to shoot photos, and it's a short walk back for a mid day rest or to grab some other camera equipment.
Looking at this years prices for where I stay it shows 900rs until the 5th, then on the 6th the price goes up to 6,000rs. That's why in the past I had to find a cheaper place to stay on the last few days.

Staying in the luxury tents is rather expansive and most of them are a little to far from town, although they do have camel carts that will take you back and forth.
For staying at the nicer places you will need to get that info from others here.

This sounds about right for the timing:

First time that I went there I arrived a few days early and it had been a wet year, so there was a lot of greenery. Many camels where already there and hundreds more where arriving, camel carts coming in large lines and many camels being herded in by people on foot, with many camps already set up.

Nice thing was that it was still green and clean where all of the camels are, which will only last a few days. Looks like there has been a lot of rain this year and those early first few days may be the best.

The ceremonies are not really that big of a deal.
Your probably want to take a camel cart or ride a camel around the camel camps, slowly walk around and see the people setting up camp, cooking over open fires and working with their camels.

There will be people trying to buy camels, taking them for test rides and racing each other. The same activity will be going on with the horses, watch you back and don't get run over by one of the hoses.

Later in the week they will be setting up the caravel rides, more small shops along the midway and thousands of more people will be showing up.

Thanks Camaleer thats exactly the info i need.

So even if one was to come say the 31st or the 1st and only come for 2 days/2 nights - even though technically before the actual start of the Nov 3rd openin ceremonies, that would still be a good experience? Even without the dates falling between the 3rd-10th? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!!!

All great info so far! Also anything I should know that oen usually doesn't think about before going for the Camel fair?

thx again!
