the full moon is on the 16th of november this year (at least on the australia end of the date line, which would make it possibly the 15th in pushkar.

Fantastic.

They were working on a website when I was there two years ago, but Google doesn't return anything, so this may have been abandoned.

The camel fair would probably be worth the cost of a plane ticket, although I didn't realise you're only arriving halfway through. Still interesting, but the focus will be on the religious aspects of the festival rather than trading camels and sheep.

just out of interest,

I have heard that its best to arrive early in the festival as most of the livestock is there before the festival actually starts.

Unfortunately I will be in Rajasthan a week too early for the festival but if I'm there on say 5 November will there be any camels/livestock already there, ie just when exactly do the herdsmen arrive??

The trading does indeed take place before the festival, and most of the camels will be gone when the religious part starts.

The dates I have for this year are Nov 12-15 for the religious festival, and Nov 8-11 for the trading (and assorted camel-based entertainment). Nov 5 is therefore probably too early, although trader may of course already be arriving. If you can shift your schedule by a few days, you'll get the full experience.

While we're on the subject...

We enquired about a room at the Hotel White House for a couple of nights checking out on the 15th (we'd love to stay for the last night of the fair but have a flight to catch from Jodhpur on the 16th) - the hotel said that we may have difficulty getting out of Pushkar on the 15th - can anyone comment on that - not sure if it was a genuine warning or, with my cynical hat on, them just trying to get an extra night out of us!
