Thanks Skell
I got more interested after your reply, especially in seeing the horses. Do you know if they do camel and/or horse races during the fair? I would love to see one... |

Soulstation's post has better information since I wasn't there for the end of the fair. There is horse and camel racing, and probably my favorite thing to watch was the horse dancing competition. I heard there was camel dancing too, but didn't see it. Did see camels getting 'decorated' by barbers.

ok i got a question here....
if for some reason someone cant get a "holiday" during the days of the pushkar mela, will it be absolutely a waste of time for him to go to pushkar on some other day (say from january 21st to 23rd)? i mean is the mela all that there is to pushkar or is it a nice place to chill out for a couple of days, all year round? |

Pushkar Camel Fair
Hiyah
I am going to be in Pushkar for the Camel fair in November and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent budget hotel. As i will be arriving on the 13th - mid way through, any booking details would be useful. Thank you |

As for budget accomadation especially during the time of the Pushkar Mela/ camel fair. you would be best (& probably it will be the only way) to find someplace that you wing it once you are there. You can go with the regular small boys who will latch on to you at the bus station or walk,it's only 5mins into town and suss out your own place, There will be somewhere but you'll never book budget in advance of the fair unless you already know somewhere & they know you.,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Check out Pushkar hotel via the IM search box, theres lots of threads on this topic, |

Ajmer
Why not stay in Ajmer instead? Slightly less frantic than Pushkar, and certainly fewer tourists. It's only a short hop on a local bus -- or a long but pleasant walk -- to Pushkar.
I heartily recommend the lovely Haveli Heritage Inn, a peaceful oasis run by a friendly family and superb home-cooking. Not to be missed! Ajmer itself has a few sights as well, including one of the most important Sufi shrines in India, and a rather over-the-top Jain temple. I would also recommend arriving a few days before the official start of the festival. Most of the camel trading goes on one or two days before the religious part of the festival starts, and it was pleasant to spend hours walking among the hundreds of camels and not encounter a white face at every turn. |

Hi
Thanks for the welcomes, Amjer and the Haveli Heritage Inn sound like a good idea especially as we are getting the train from Delhi to Amjer. Do you have any contact details for the hotel or a web site that you would recommend using to enquire about availability? Unfortunately we're don't arrive in India until the 12th and won't be in Amjer until the 13th. Thank again |

They are listed in the Footprint guidebook to India, not sure about LP. It's about a five-minute walk from the station. Coming out of the station, turn right, and walk along the main road for a bit, until it splits. Take the right fork, and follow the main road again. It's on the opposite (left, as you walk) side of the road, through an archway, and adjacent to a well-signposted multi-storey hotel. |
