i don't remember any names, but definitely stay up in the fort . . . there are some really nice havelis in the rear bastions of the fort. opposite the entry side . . . easily under 1500rs. awesome views and really nice terraces . . .
what if . . . maybe . . . say . . . suppose!
Many over prices places to choose.
The most popular places are no secret, Paradise, Suraj etc: map of Jaislmer. Booking in advance is good way to pay a lot more too. The fort is very old and run down with some plumbing problems.
Staying in the fort is very bad for it and is not advisable if you care about the Forts heritage. The Fort is in the process of being saved from erosion caused by heavy tourism so I would advise staying outside the fort. Try Shahi Palace Hotel, I stayed there last August and the brothers who run it are lovely, very helpful and it is a 5 minute walk from the Fort entrance. Plus you can sit on their rooftop restaurant and look at the Fort lit up at night, something you can't do if you stay inside the Fort.
well i'll have to agree with robbie there . . . though i had a great time staying inside the fort, it is no concealed secret theat there is no sewage system, and the ramparts are giving in to the weight of the dampening soil . . . so i guess either live in the fort and come down to answer nature ;-) or do as robbie says!

There is a Desert Haveli guest house and a Desert Boys one inside the Fort. Both are fine. Contrary to popular belief, there actually is a sewerage system which drains down to outside the Fort. However, maybe it is antiquated, and can't cope with excess water because there is also a problem with water seepage into the underground and this is what is threatening the Fort.
Shreenath Palace and Hotel Victoria inside the Fort are also fine.
But if you choose for conservation reasons to stay outside the Fort there is a wide choice of many good places. Check the Hotels listings on this Forum.
I think Star Haveli is run by Shahi Palace people?

Budget hotel suggestion in Bikaner and Jaisalmer
Hi,
I am going to Jaisalmer in January. I am looking for a budget hotel, preferably under Rs 800-900/- per double room per day. Hotel Paradise and Jaisal Palace look like two possibilities. Which is better? Is there some other hotel that is better than both of these in this tariff range?
I am also looking for a similarly priced hotel in Bikaner. Any suggestions? I found Bhairon Vilas, but they didn't respond to my e-mail- it would be great if you could suggest some alternatives!
Thanks in advance for your help!

For a budget option nothing beats the RTDC huts at hotel Moomal. Don't take the rooms ...they are more expensive....its the huts which are sheer value for money. Last December it was around 800 RS per night that too during new years time. Hotel moomal is walking distance from the main market and fort.
If you don't mind a bit far from the hustle and bustle then check out Dessert Moon Guest house near sunset points. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the view is something to die for...
Last year december the rates were within your budget even for an AC room.
Here is the view you get from there...
