Udaipur by a million miles. Jaipur is a great big city and Udaipur is a quaint place built around a lovely lake, which has water in it for the first time in ages - It's really lovely.
Sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma

UDAIPUR

You will know why when you go there.

jaipur is simply a commercial city. Even amongst the Rajputs, the Jaipur family never commanded too much respect. This is because, being businessmen essentially, the Jaipur Kings quickly aligned with the invaders rather than fighting to preserve their freedom.

On the contrary, Udaipur family was always known for its valour and courage.

Even today, Udaipur with its palaces, lakes and quaint lanes and bylanes is a much more beautiful and romantic place.

It's not as simple as that.....

You will likely have more time to spend in Jaipur than Udaipur, simply because of the transport connections.

If Delhi, Bharatpur, Mathura, Agra, Mt. Abu, Ahmedabad or somewhere close to Udaipur are not also on your Itinerary (good connections from Udaipur), then Jaipur should be your choice, Udaipur can often be difficult to fit into an Itinerary.

Smile Hi

Udaipur if you have time and Jaipur if you do not. It takes 5 hours to reach Jaipur from Delhi and more than 12 to reach Udaipur.

Udaipur is more peaceful and the lake adds to the charm. Both have good palaces and are colorful. For me the issue would be how much time you are willing to spend on the road. Anyway you have to travel via Jaipur to reach Udaipur if going by road.

Hope this helps.

As steven_ber points out, its not that straightforward - depends on other places on the itinerary, as well as mode of travel.

Udaipur is two hours by flight from Delhi while Jaipur is one hour flight away. But there are more flights from Udaipur to places in Gujrat or Mumbai.

Udaipur!

It's an easy flight from Delhi if time is an issue. Jaipur is well worth a visit but is part of the well worn "Golden Triangle" and a haven for touts. There are plenty of touts in Udaipur as well--they're just better humoured.

A bit extreme....it took me longer than 6 hours to get to and from the Monkey temple.

Jaipur is often considered to be overrated, but when you have a look around there is a lot to see.

Udaipur is never considered to be overrated, but it just didn't do it for me.

Just goes to show that we are all different.
