Phalodi? Anyone stayed here? Lal Niwas?

We had thought of stopping for a night in Phalodi between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer (in Jan) to see the cranes and to see Osiyan on the way. However I looked up the Lal Niwas hotel on the web, and it is VERY expensive, (3000 + 800 for extra bed!) and although there are no reviews here, a review in another place wasn't that good. If its going to cost us a fortune and not be so great, we'll just go straight to Jaisalmer in one day with a car and driver rather than buses and an overnight. I've already booked in Jaisalmer, but I'm sure my new best friend Fifu will change my booking!

If lal Niwas is the Heritage hotel there then apparently not very good according to a writer I have just (by coincidence) been talking to at lunch today in Landour. He was telling me some of the best places he stayed at whilst doing a German publication on heritage hotels in Rajasthan and his wife was the photographer. He said the service and the boys working there were not good and it was not worth the money.

I read a review in another travel forum that said pretty much the same thing - a bit dismal and lacklustre, and it is expensive - 800 R for an extra bed! Just seems over the top to me.

Think I'll pass on it - I wonder if there's anywhere else in Phalodi, or should we just go straight to Jaisalmer.

it sounds very expensive - i haven't been there so can't say if other accommodation there or not. These people did say Phalodi itself was very interesting, because an unspoilt, not modernized in any way village. Maybe you could leave Jodhpur early and go there on the way and have lunch at Phalodi. If you went by car this would be possible - from phalodi to Jaisalmer would be around 2 hours i think. (the shift button on this computer not working properly so can't do some caps for some reason - sorry!)

I stayed at Lal Niwas last January, and my experience was pretty much the same as everyone else's. Not a bad place, but not worth the money. The geysers in the bathrooms were the smallest I have ever seen - enough for a 30-second shower before the water ran cold again. The rooms were pretty basic, and the ones that face the street very noisy.

However, the staff were attentive and kind, Phalodi itself is a lovely little place and the cranes are sight that should not be missed. If only there were somewhere else to stay in the town.

EDIT: At the time I stayed there, I was the only guest in the hotel. It might be worth negotiating with them.

Lunch in Phalodi sounds nice - we were going to bus to Phalodi and then bus to Jaisalmer but if we spend the money on a car and driver and go the long way round through Osiyan with lunch at Phalodi that could be good. The cranes do sound amazing - but like me with the rat temple, my son is a bit freaked out by birds, so it could have led to an argument anyway!
